Aircraft / Bomb Tugs

Doe’s anybody have photo’s of Ferguson TE-20’s (Gray Fergies)being used as bomb trolley or aircraft tugs , I have 2 , one for show and one for work . I want to repaint one in RAF livery , I have seen these before, some had front mudguards and nudge bars , I’m especially interested in photos of the rear hitch but ANY photos would be appreciated.Thanks.

RE: Aircraft / Bomb Tugs

Wow Gary , you must be a wealthy man , an MF135 , these are selling for crazy money in Sunny Scotland , farmers use them for scattering fertiliser and yard cleaning . There is a big demand for them over here , I’ve seen absolute junk 135’s selling for over £2000 , farmers want them as they are economic for the lighter work on the farm , collectors buy them to restore , I’ve met people who have spent in excess of £3500 just to restore one just to display standards there is also demand for tractors for export to India too.
I have 2 TED20’s which were purchased new by my family in 1951 and 1952 , I’ve restored one of them but they are both used around my uncle’s orchard , the Shuttleworth Collection have a TED 20 as a tug – I wonder if any body has photo’s of it ,
Sad hobby but I can’t afford my own aeroplane so the next bet thing is replicating one as a tug and buy a bomb trolley.

Cheers

RE: Aircraft / Bomb Tugs

Top banana !

Got a soft spot for the old Fergie meself as well, but the only Tractor I get to play with is the Ford 4000 down the yacht club for launching recovering powerboats.

I remember the old Fergie 135 that I used to drive around, you start it without the ignition key by simply using the oil dipstick in the ignition barrel…iether means the barrel was knackered or the dipstick had a funny profile !

There’s loads of old fordsons, fergies, david brown’ etc out here in Cyprus and there is also a thriving second hand market for them as well. You be surprised how many are in almost pristine condition and they are all used daily in the fruit plantation……leaving mud all over the road for my bike to get covered in !!!

Glad the advert may have helped and hope to see some piccies of the completed restoration when the old girl is finished. I have another wartime piccie of a bomb tug but my scanner aint working at the mo’. Soon as it is, I’ll try a scan and get it on the web for you.

Cheers

Gary I owe you a beer or two , I contacted a few companies by Email with your photo , managed to get a full set of tinwork from a guy in Ireland who bought a TED20 from the MOD and stripped it down to use it on the farm , he also has all the parts for converting the brakes to a hydraulic system , thanks again.

RE: Aircraft / Bomb Tugs

Thanks Gary , I’ve got the name of a company who make single curvature panels for tractors ( Englemann farms) is it ok with you if I send them your attachment as the Fergie panels look almost exactly the same . have got the old girl painted now all I need is running boards and mudguards on in yellow .Thanks again.

Alastair

Not Fergie’s but wondered if any use in respect of mudguard patterns etc which I would imagine where fairly similar in shape and size.

I’ll keep looking through my library but have to admit I dont remember seeing much on this topic.

Cheers

Gary

No I don’t mean as a WW 2 tractor , those were mostly old Fordson water washers or industrial versions of the DB Cropmaster , one of the photos I have seen showed a TEF-20 pulling a big trolley-acc , there are Vampires in the background and I reckon it must be around 1952–3 ???

Think your timing is out for a TE 20 as a ww2 tractor. Will check om monday but think that 1949 is a critical date……..

Think DBrown are the tractors you typically see as tugs in ww2.

TE20 was produced by Ford prior to Ferguson but will see what I can rake up.

RE: Aircraft / Bomb Tugs

Hi Tom , I noticed one at one of the shows last year , the chap had a display board with a few photos on it , I took photos of his photos !! but as you can imagine the quality is not great and as usual I lost his number , I’ve been round most of the shows again this year but no luck , I’ll just have to keep trying.

RE: Aircraft / Bomb Tugs

Don’t know of any myself, seen plenty of pics of Fordsons and Cases but never a TE-20, this is a new subject to me as I didn’t even know a bomb towing Fergie existed.

(a surprised) Tom 😉
