In the mid 1960’s I saw a what I think was a Merlin engined DC4 at Panshanger . I believe it was broken up there , can anyone supply any details , such as what was the registration and what livery . I am guessing it was an Argonaut and it was maybe in Skyways colours .

I can’t be certain, but I reckon that’s Panshanger. The trees behind the tail certainly fit.
This picture fits my recollection too .

Agreed, but there are conflicting stories of where it was scrapped. It’s reputed to have gone to Luton but there are two of us on this thread that are certain it was broken up at Panshanger in a place that looks remarkably like the last picture.

CF-TFN
I’m new to Flickr and on-line posting, but I thought I’d try posting my first photo here. This is a shot of CF-TFN taken by Gerald Lawrence and from the Tony Clarke collection. It looks like it was taken at Luton after storage at Panshanger. I have no further info, and would be grateful for any input.

Keith, that is SUCH a sad sight!
I am sure I read ‘Airwork’ on a pukka printed sign – can’t remember if it was on a wing stood up against a wall or on the boarded wall of the shed. There were 3 Procters and a Prentice jammed into the shed which had vertical timber boarding and looked far more dilapidated that the aircraft.
I had cycled over from Harpenden with a school friend and we sneaked up a rough track, through trees and into the shed via a hole made by a couple of missing boards. We didn’t dare show ourselves outside, feeling really naughty, so the visit was a brief one – but one that left a strong impression.
If you do speak to Mr R of ‘DMT, please thank him for his kindness in showing me over his aircraft. I was gathering detail for a future 1:4 scale model and he was really helpful. The Hornet Moth model got elbowed out by a Zenair 701, but it WILL happen – perhaps around March/April next year.

The Heathrow Argonaut was discussed here

Apologies for slight thread drift but I remember taxying past the BOAC Argonaut at LHR way back in my Trimoth. I think the BOAC apprentices used it for practical training with engine running etc? Not sure how that was relevant to the jet age though!
Whatever happened to that Argonaut and what was its registration? Does anyone remember?

I too was a regular visitor to Panshanger, as an ankle-biter in the mid fifties and later as a teenager in the sixties.
I only remember one DC-4M. I wonder how I missed the other one, they’re big enough. The one I remember was parked/stored/abandoned at the airfield end of the T2 and I’m certain it was broken up where it stood. Coming in on the old track from WGC it was the first thing that came into sight.
See dates for CF-TFE in msg 22 above. Only there for about three months, stayed for Christmas and the New Year, then headed for sunnier climes, Florida !!!!

One of the Proctors was still complete in October 1959 when it was painted ‘DM-FAS’ for a film-anybody remember which film?

eye4wings. Firstly I did not notice ‘DMT on the cover of the book ! and its based a couple of miles from my home, I see it and its owner often, must bring this to his attention ?
There are many many references to Prentice and Proctor aircraft in the book, are you sure it was Airwork ? as the only major mention of them is as a very early Cessna dealer at Panshanger in the T2 hanger ??
Meanwhile there are several mentions of Proctors in large numbers with “Aerocontracts and Continental Aircraft Services” and a lot broken up and burnt …… see scan below ……. Keith.

Keith, does that book also contain any info on what happened to the Airwork Prentice and Proctors dismantled in an old hanger on the N side of the field in the mid-late 50s?
I am up with the excellent Proctor restoration work at Gt.Oakley, but it seems the airframes were not the actual ones stored at Panshanger, so I still don’t know what happened to them.
Also broken up I expect.
Interested to see Hornet Moth ‘DMT on the feild in the cover shot. I was photographing her at Gt.Oakley at the classic fly-in this year.

I too remember seeing both C-4M2s at Panshanger in the early 60’s …. Happy Days !
A few quotes from Micheal Packham’s book in my post above …..
G-AHPB Viking 1A …. arrived Panshanger 14 December 1961 …. to Autair Luton April 1963.
G-ARIC C-54A Skymaster World Wide Aviation colours …. arrived Panshanger November 1961 …. sold to Belgian Congo as 9Q-RIC April 1962.
CF-TFE Canadair C-4M2 …. Arrived Panshanger December 1961 …. to Baginton 14 January 1962.
CF-TFN Canadair C-4M2 …. Arrived Panshanger Late 1961 ? …. departed early 1962 ? to Luton, scrapped there in 1964 !

G-AHPB, to Autair at Luton in 1963, now in a Swiss museum as D-BABY.
Thank you for that.
Channel Airways were keen to buy that Viking but for some reason the deal fell
through!

I visited Panshanger more than once in those days , and my recollection was that the last time the aircraft was in a sorry state and I think it was sitting on its tail , I am pretty sure it was beyond flying out again , it may well have been engineless . There was also an airworthy red and whitw Dragon Rapide
OHOPE
Looks as though Larry Milberry’s info is incorrect. Did seem rather strange to fly an a/c 20 or so miles to scrap it.
sorry TFE inbound 61 out a few weeks later 62
Thks, those dates fit better. It is likely Panshanger would have been severely snow bound in Jan 63: year of the “big freeze”.

North-Star CF-TFE ferried in 2De62 out to Baginton 14Jan62(pic in clubhouse)
North-Star CF-TFN ferried in 26Mar62 broken up PANSHANGAR May65.
Guess the departure date for -TFE was 14 Jan 63 ??
Milberry has several ex Overseas North Stars, including -TFN, as “sold to A.J.Gaul”. What was the connection, if any, between A.J.Gaul and Keegan Aviation?
