Aircraft camoflage patterns

I’ve often wondered how an aircraft’s camo pattern is designed. For example, when the old USAF Southeast Asia pattern was brought out, each aircraft had it’s own tailored pattern even though the colors were standardized. Is there some mathematical formula that is used to figure out the placement and size of color areas? I would find it hard to believe that it’s just “that looks about right”.
