Former French aircraft-carrier Clemenceau is heading for Teesside to be scrapped.

Before they scrap her, someone ought to recover those brand new, crated aircraft from the hangar before they’re scrapped too.

In a Parisian paper is a cartoon showing the Clemencau leaving France and two French sailors ashore watch the event. One says ” Battle of the Nile, Trafalgar. Another French warship goes to be destroyed by the English!”

In the absence of a decision from our gutless, spinless and incompetant Nu Lab leaders as to the procurement of the ‘new’ carriers, perhaps we ought to give it a full service, a lick of paint then operate her!!!

why not just sink her as a reef, that has happened to a number of old warships in Australia. Makes a great diving spot and the marine life seem to love it.
They cut holes in the thing all over the place so divers can visit it safey
They also remove all the nasty stuff inside – with a ship like this, I suspect once you’ve done that, you need to scrap it.
Both the sinking of HMAS Perth II and the carrier USS Oriskany occurred after a good deal of work making sure they were ‘clean’.

Hmmm, why not moor it on the Tees, and open it to the public as a tourist attraction, for a few years before putting the torch to it. You’ve got to think laterally in these hard economic times!
I like that idea – with the weakness of the £ more Brits holidaying at home and more foreign visitors.
However just think of all the H&S issues associated with opening it to the public.

In fact the Clémenceau has been towed around the world for the last year or so. It was on its way to India for scrapping when the ecological storm it provoked made them take it back to France and then negotiate with the UK to do the job properly. It is of interest that the liner FRANCE is being broken up on the Indian subcontinent at this very moment. Bits of it were auctioned in Paris yesterday, getting anything from 300 to 100,000 euros.

Well i am a local, i saw the Clemenceau coming in and i fully support Able in all they are doing. They are to build a dry dock so any toxic “stuff” cannot get into the water. As long as the local wildlife does not suffer, i think its a win win situation. As a fabricator/welder i think we are in a position to do the job right, at least its not getting beached in india and getting gutted on a beach with no health and safety.
