Aircraft crashes after crocodile on board escapes and sparks panic

A small airliner crashed into a house, killing a British pilot and 19 others after a crocodile smuggled into the aircraft in a sports bag escaped and started a panic.

The plane came down despite no apparent mechanical problems during an internal flight in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

It has now emerged that the crash was caused by the concealed reptile escaping and causing a stampede in the cabin, throwing the aircraft off-balance.

A family friend told me about an experience they had of flying a domestic flight in Russia on Aeroflot about 20+yrs ago (during the Cold War era)

Apparently there were ducks & goats in the passenger cabin.

Obviously they did not cause a crash & it sounded like this was quite “normal”.

If you come fly in “darkest” Africa, i.e. those countries that have poor aviation standards, you will find these kinds of anomalies all the time. They are accidents waiting for a place to happen. I feel very sorry for the copilot whom I imagine was building hours with that company. 🙁 RIP

My advice to anyone trying to build flying experience is to avoid those kind of operations. Do a thorough background check on the company, where they fly to and from, who does their maintenance, are they on the EU blacklist and why, and use forums/contacts to gather information. Your life is not worth it for a few flying hours.

For what it’s worth, over at http://www.luchtzak.be/forums/viewtopic.php?p=239364#p239364 someone who claims to have known the captain of this flight said the Belgian pilot would have surely noticed any reptile being brought aboard “his” plane…

Perhaps this time he did not? 🙁

Read about this in the paper. It’s not a story you’d believe if someone brought it up in conversation as it’s so… well… improbable.

Of all the things to cause an air crash this has to rate as the weirdest!

yes i’ll have the crocodile sammich and make it snappy!

Twenty people lost their lives in this crash, which hardly makes it a fit subject for silly jokes.

Poor form. 🙁
