Aircraft damaged in yesterdays storm. 2004 thread; not related to current weather!

An incredibly violent thunderstorm ripped through here yesterday afteroon and appears to have taken out 3 parked/ picketed Austers at Shotteswell, Banbury.

Damage reported by others as ‘serious, possibly all write-offs.’

I’ll post again when I have had a look.

The owner was planning to take the silver one with roundels out of service anyway as he says it’s getting dangerous to fly though he didn’t say why. What may have given the impression that it was three aircraft is the fact that a caravan was involved (that’ll please Jeremy Clarkson). Apparently the wind picked one up, threw it upside down on top of the other one and then flipped the lot onto the caravan and wrote that off as well

I saw the silver “Auster” again the other evening – was that you Hairyplane?

Is Barry Clay involved with these aircraft?

Whatever, rather sad but lets hope they fly again.

Such a shame. Considering the number of light aircraft that spend their lives tied down or indeed just parked out in the open at aerodromes and airstrips round the UK it is rare for such a happening.
Thank God our Skybolt has a secure and hangar rash free spot in a grand hangar at Leicester.
Cheers and sympathy,

Write off

Hi Nermal.

Heres a link I found.

If the Terrier aint an insurance write off, I’ll eat your grottiest hat.

As for the Autocar, I suspect the insurers will write that off too.

🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁 🙁

Not the news anyone wants to hear, particularly if you are interested in British light aircraft as I am. I wish the owner of the Autocar the best of luck getting it repaired and airworthy again (I have a particular soft spot for Autocars. It was two J/5Gs that got me interested in aviation at the tender age of four!). Sincere symapthieswith the owners of the Terrier and maybe it can be restored – again.

Calm down! No beef – just that after Miss Helen there seemed to be a thing about say nothing about accidents because those who know will say what they want us to hear. If I had been you and told the world that one aircraft was written off then would I have been flamed because I am not involved in aviation? – Nermal

Any damage to any aircraft is very sad, especially when this storm was so localised. I would like to wish the owners of these aircraft all the best, although I am aware that the Terrier G-ASDL is a write off, but maybe the Autocar G-AKRG is repairable with some tender loving care.

Damaged Austers

Dear Nermal,

I dont need to read a report to tell me what I have seen.

I am careful to avoid speculation.

Let me know exactly what your beef is. If have transgressed in any way, I’ll wash the dirt off your dummy, stick it back in your mouth and say sorry.

I think it is important to share ths type of information

You mean speculate as a bye-stander rather than wait for the official reports? Be very carerful since that might get you flamed around here 🙁 – Nermal

Sad news. 🙁 Let’s hope that the owners can get some help to repair this nice machine.

Damaged Austers @ Shotteswell

It was actually 2 aircraft and not 3. Bad enough nevertheless. Terrier G-ASDL is a complete write-off. Whilst the damage to Autocar G-AKRG appears to be restricted to a written off starboard wing and some glazing, my guess is that the repairs/ inspection will exceed the relatively low value of the airframe. Anyone got a spare wing?

The Autocar, a rare bird, is powered by a Blackburn Cirrus Major 3, a rare engine these days. The owner also has a fully overhauled spare engine too.

The destruction of ‘DL is paricularly distressing for the owners – all great guys and enthusiasts to boot – because they have spent the last year and clearly a considerable amount of money getting the thing flying again.

I think it is important to share ths type of information, especially as both aircraft were substantially picketed. Alas, insufficient for what was a devastating, localised storm.

I flew over the area yesterday and entire crops have been destroyed.

A sad shame….

🙁 I guess the third aircraft mentioned is the silver doped with roundels one (identity?) that I saw last week.

Should have extracted finger and had a proper look before now.

Thats a real shame. I know the owner of ARKG and he is a total Auster enthusiast . He will be gutted. However Austers do have remarkable powers of
recuperation so dont write them off yet by any stretch!

Hi all

I have just received this mail from a friend who was at Shotteswell today;

*** G-ASDL Terrier & G-ARKG Autocar, both ripped from their picketing, here is a picture that I took today, the Terrier is a write off the Autocar G-ARKG will need a new starboard wing and a lot of inspection, the tornado ripped across Northampton,Banbury and straight through Shotteswell, the aircraft apparently live outside and must have cratwheeled more than once judging by the damage,I have never seen a tail twist like that ! please promise me that you will never ever leave your ***** outside to the elements.

I will not post the picture (not my copyright) of ‘DL but believe me it is not a pretty sight – the fuselage is twisted and both wings broken (snapped). 😡 😮 🙁

Tried to have a peak, but the sheds are off-road and tucked away. No sign of damage to the sheds and the grain crop around the strip but a tree on the boundary is down.

Hairyplane?

Strewth, you must be closeby, Hairyplane. Those Austers fly (used to fly…?) over most days. Easier on the eye than the micro-light thingy (kite + lawn mower) from there.

I’ll try and take a peak on the way home tonight.
