Aircraft ID please

This is a bit of a long shot but does anybody know what this may have been flying around the Lake district two days ago?? it is from a non aircraft related forum.

Over the years hillwalking I have seen a lot of low flying aircraft mostly Hawks and more recently Eurofighters; occasionally there will be an exotic or unusual one that I can’t identify. There was one of those today seen in the NE Lake District.
It was a small single engined jet with a cylindrical fuselage. short straight wings with, it seemed, an even taper on leading and trailing edges, ‘pods’ on the wingtips and a conventional tailplane. The engine nacelle appeared to be in the nose.
It reminded me of an early post WWII experimental aircraft.
Anyone any idea what it might have been?

I know it’s not much of a description but straight wing jet intake in the nose? has to be early something??

Cheers guys.
Once it is recovered and cleaned i shall post some more pictures up .
We picked up a few more pieces which came from the wing section.
One piece is a long hinge connected to some ally skin.
The hinge is about or over 2 foot long so guessing it could have joined onto this piece somehow.
I shall have to try and get close to a meteor wing to get some photos of the area to determine if it is either pt or stbd side that is there.
Thanks again 🙂

A large number of Mk8, and all the night fighter, Meteors were built by AW, who also developed the night fighters.

Meteor part?

Yes, I think you are correct with that assumption.

It looks like T.7/Mk.8-onwards, with the steel rear spar banjos, and the wedge-shaped block in the second photo appears to be one of the aileron internal mass-balance weights.

I don’t know how likely this is, but what about the Hispano SA-200 Saeta? It has the ‘old’ look about it, nose intake, straight tapered wings, and tip tanks. The wings are not so short, though.

Could you have seen a Hawk T2?

The T2 nose does have the mini intake look and the aircraft does have wingtip pods. If the aircraft was in primer a black nose can also make it appear to have a nose intake at a distance.

How difficult can it be?
I mean, this is the English countryside, not Area 51 and a bunch of Yanks with overactive imaginations!

Short wings with even taper, straight. Engine intake in nose. Conventional tailplane.

BAC Lightning.

(OK, so I’m ignoring the pods on the wingtips and all common sense here…)

Seriously though, JP or Strikemaster seems to me most likely. Minimans said the intake was in the nose, that doesn’t necessarily mean at the tip of the nose, does it? Could be near the nose on the sides, like a JP. And all the other criteria fit perfectly…

MMMmmm … The only ‘nose intake’ jet I can think of, still in the UK at the moment, is a certain F-86 Sabre, is it still at Duxford ?? Has it had an outing in the recent fine weather ??

It would help to know precisely where and when he saw it.
We get the full range of current UK/ US/ European stuff here but nothing more exotic than that.

I see a lot of what flies around the NE Lakes and there was a bit of action at the end of last week.
I would have said JP as it flies around quite a lot, you can`t rule it out altogether because it could have been a trick of the light acting on the nose, however, they would maybe not have been flying it in that area with military aircraft about, but there is absolutely nothing stopping them. I have been up during the week with Harriers buzzing around here, they always keep in radio contact.
It would help to know precisely where and when he saw it.

I was coming over Hartsop on the way to Ullswater on friday and saw first a Harrier, then a Tucano. As already mentioned, I know that several JP’s are based within 20 odd minutes flight time.
