 watching this movie last night i had forgotten how ‘good’ the aircraft in the film were – I guess the Dak and JU-52 are Aces High – but what about the argus engined Criquet/Storch (lovely BTW) and what appears to be a Pilatus pretending (quite well actually) to be an Arado or twin seat 109….
As y’all know my recognition skills are in inverse proportion to my chisel-jawed good looks….
What aircraft were they and where are they now…

Here is a link to some information on the Dakota used in the movie.

Nice 🙂
Did it always wear those markings, or were they applied for the film?
Not sure Daz, the only published photos I’ve seen of the Sipa, show the same colours and markings. Very nice all the same though.

Sorry guys i think you are all getting a bit carried away, if you look at the pic of Mr Caine infront of the Buchon it is plainly a made up shot of two images one on top of the other!!!!
any particluar reason why?
best regards Steve

That may be true but over the years I have seen a number of publicity shots from the film showing Michael Caine beside a Buchon.

I believe the Dak was GAKNB which may have been with British United Airways at the time.

That Buchon….
On my DVD, (obviously not the special edition version described), it’s on-screen for a mere second or two before the camera pans away, but I saw that the prop was a) three-bladed, and b) the wrong shape, compared to the BofB movie Buchons thus fitted for ground scenes.
Also, if you look very closely at the cover art with Michael Caine on it, the Buchon wears a large letter beneath the exhaust.

Do any of the deleted scenes explain where the Dakota came from? Michael Caine asks but Captain Hook (the german eyepatch guy) changes the subject, always wondered where it did (obviously not real, but I always imagined it as coming from North Africa)
Col. Max Radl, played by Robert Duvall 😉
(with an obviously better accent than Michael Caine! :D)

A viewing of the movie may be in order tonight – I don’t recall seeing a Buchon, but it would explain the cover art showing Michael Caine standing in front of one.
(What extended version??)
I bought a “Collectors Edition” DVD of “The Eagle Has Landed” a year or two ago. This has a number of Special Features. You can also view an “extended” version of the film featuring previously deleted scenes. This includes a lengthy scene on the airfield where Caine & Co discuss the forthcoming mission. It is here that you see the Buchon in the background . I believe it can also be glimpsed very briefly in the background in the shorter version of the film just before the paratroops are first shown the Dakota.

Now it gets interesting!!
Just watching the film at the moment, and I spied the nose of the Buchon (and the Junkers/CASA) in the background in the scene where the troops go to the Dak in the hangar.
The Buchon is a replica… 😉

From what I can remember (tries not to think too hard) the Storch was the one owned by the Hon Patrick Lindsay (G-AZMH), but then I may be wrong.
Martin
If it is G-AZMH, it was first registered on 20th January 1971, which means she was definitely around for the filming, apparently she’s now in Germany and off the list, it’s a Criquet with an Argus engine by the way, and very nice as well! By the way, does anyone else think Michael Caines accent in the movie is the worst German accent ever?!
By: DazDaMan - 27th February 2006 at 18:12
The two seat buchon thing was used to drop donald sutherlands character out as the bloke with the fake german accent says ‘to get out of the plane pilot turns it upside down you undo your seatbelt and out you come’ or something like that.

For anyone interested, the ‘captured British MTB’ is a genuine Motor Torpedo Boat – the bridge and oerlikon 20mm gun on the front were fake though as well as a few other items to make her look like a more common MTB, as she was a prototype boat, her website is here http://www.mtb102.com/
