Aircraft Landing Lights

Hello,

Quick Question, What is the normal distance from runway when you would expect an aircraft to turn on the landing lights?

The reason I ask, regularly on an evening I see aircraft heading over to MAN (more than likely) and only the odd one or two which I see ever have landing lights turned on? (im around 30 miles from MAN & 18 miles from LBA, the aircraft are flying away from LBA)

Can anyone advise the rules regarding altitude / distance.

Cheers

Rick

This copilot asks his captain : “What do I do if I turn on the landing lights and I see a mountain in front of me?”. The captain replies : “Boy, you turn them off again.”

The vast majority of airline SOP is for landing lights to be on below 10,000ft, and off above 10,000ft, this is my airline’s SOP as well.

In our company SOPs the landing lights are on at all times below 10’000 (Climb and Descent)

It varies from airline to airline.

I know some have their aircraft turn them on with the landing gear being extended.

One airlines SOP I saw had their aircraft turn them on below 5000 feet.
