Aircraft numbering question

What do the numbers -343 stand for? For example on a 747-300 aircraft, I have seen the number sometimes as 747-343. I do understand that it is a 747, 300 series aircraft, but my question specifically contains to why it says 343. Does it further specify the options in the aircraft?

Thanks in advance,
Sam.

RE: Aircraft numbering question

All info above true. I think with Airbus, the second number is the aircrft manufacturer (eg IAE, GE etc) then the last letter is the actual engine type.

With regrd to the Boeing codes, I have a few listed here if you need to find what code is for which airline:

RE: Aircraft numbering question

nope – airbus is quite the opposite – they are modelled on the engine types – i think the A320 for example only comes in A320-111, 211, 214 an 231 varient – similar numbers for the A319/321 but ii know of A321-232s – i think these are just more powerful engines

RE: Aircraft numbering question

Thanks for all the responses. I assume Airbus has the same system of numbering?

Thanks in advance,
Sam.

RE: Aircraft numbering question

Not entirely true though. Martin Air did rename the aircraft in the Dutch register. I have to look it up which one it was, but it can be done.

RE: Aircraft numbering question

this number stays with the a/c throughout it’s lifespan, whichever airline it transfers to – for example Ryanair had Boeing 737-204ADVs which are ex Britannia, -230’s ex Lufthansa – and the B747-146 i was on last week was ex JAL

RE: Aircraft numbering question

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-11-02 AT 08:47 AM (GMT)]The numbering you speak of was designed by Boeing in the 1950s.It allows identification of the first owner of an aircraft by the use of a number which,as said, designates its previous owner(s)
For example BA’s code is 36 so it’s aircraft are assigned 747-436 or 757-236.

I’m sure someone else will be able to explain in better.
