Aircraft part(P38?)

Hi chaps.

A fellow on the Fs forum I populate has been to a modelling show at Soesterberg Airforce museum.

He posted a picture asking if anyone could shed any light on it.
It looks like a centre cockpit section,posibbly,I thought anyway,from a P38.

Anyone got any better ideas???

I can tell you that it isn’t from a B-25 for starters. The S-13 connection looks promising but I’m in doubt. The rear end of the nacelle seems to slope down quite steeply on that S-13 photo which isn’t present in the mystery part. The top line of the mystery nacelle seems to continue and extend over the flaps.

Edit: These provide some more clues

There is a very pronounced vertical line just in front of the leading edge that the mystery nacelle doesn’t have. Based on that I’d say it is not the S-13.

Looking at that pic Cees,I’d say you’re right on the money.

Have yourself a big cigar;) 😉 😉

Sorry, don’t smoke or do you mean the Clinton way?:)
The nose section on show at Texel is owned by our chairman, and was
restored by Fokker shortly before they went belly up (nothing to do with that I hope) but there are more sections around. It’s a nice looking aircraft would be nice to see it reconstructed one day.

I think you guys are right in saying it’s a nacelle.

My man originally thought it to be a tail unit, but the airofoil section looks too thick for a tailplane.

Cees your suggestion sound pretty plausible.

My man reckons the part is sitting outside the former commisary and he thought it to be the tail section from a B-25.

Possibly Fokker S13? Only one prototype built as a bomber trainer but due to the Marhall plan not put into production. The nose section is on show at Texel and sections of wing, nacelle and tail are IIRC at Soesterberg.
Just a hunch

It’s similar in profile to a Vicker’s Varsity…. but that engine mount thingy just doesn’t look right, and what would a Varsity be doing in Holland too. Perhaps that’s something not originally with the airframe. Anyone else have any ideas?

Very good point Richard. I thought the same but thought perhaps I was mistaken about the undercarriage well. (The old eyes aren’t as good as they once were.)

Definitely not P-38. Not sure what aircraft it’s from, but it’s clearly the engine nacelle for a radial engine. It also appears to house landing gear. If that is an engine mount, it’s for a pretty small, un-supercharged engine as there is little to no room for the accessory section.

Cheers,
Richard

Not so sure it is. Could that be engine bearers on the front bulkhead?
