aircraft recognition

have racked brain to eliminate all possibilities.there again it could be a case of ” can’t see the wood for the trees ” I recognise the headphones as American, ergo American aeroplane. there appears to be an M/G ? grip poking out stage right, but the main two blokes viewable are wearing British BD. the chap on the right has Eighth Army patch on sleeve. Middle East / Italy campaign ?
Plexiglas / frame configuration has me puzzled. Fort, Lib ? image reversed ? over to you, thanking all contributors in anticipation

Certainly looks right for B-17E framework glazing & MG mount, compare with pic of Swamp Ghost here, http://www.theswampghost.com/photos/2003/int/b17-int-nose.jpg

It looks like the nose of a B17E to me. with the machine gun socket in the perspex above the chap on the right.
