Is this piece of long metal anything aircraft related? Lanc perhaps?
It looks a bit modern for any wartime plane I’m thinking, and suspiciously car related, but worth a check.

like you i would of preferred it to of been Spitfire related lol.
Reminds of a thread i put on a few years ago asking for help on an aircraft relic identity, it turned out to be a 1960s television motherboard argghhh, but its always good to see people asking for help on this forum as you just never no what it may be, (im still learning) but hopefully some of my i.d. help requests also helps others as some very knowledgeable people on this forum.

I’m quite happy to go with Maxi then Hawker. My point of reference was a Rimmer Bros catalogue for Triumph Herald spares, taking it that the upper side of the splined shaft had gone AWOL………
And…….. I admit to being drawn to the Spitfire connection being more appropriate to an aviation forum!

Here is a photo of the Maxi with t coupling bracket, those are the mounting points by the pinion I can’t quite make out on the first photo.
Ive actually got a Maxi steering rack at work if you like i can take a photo and post an image so you can see if it matches, let me know.
I guess this post should be on a classic car forum lol, but a rare item none the less.

Hi 52 classic
Its definitely not Spitfire as the yoke adjustment is a screw type with shims and not plated with 2 bolts also the spitfire has two mettle flat type brackets at either end one beside the pinion and one beside the gator and n/s bush. but if i could have a clearer photo i can definitely identify it for you Southernair99.
The Maxi did also have a coupling type set up

My guess is that the rack is from a SPITFIRE……… A Triumph Spitfire (or maybe a Herald). Give away is the circular rubber part which acts as a flexible joint uniting the column to the rack. AIRC Cortinas and Maxis have a ‘proper’ Hardy Spicer type joit to do this job.

Needs a near side bracket mount to be a Cortina
Also the side plate adjuster or as we refer it yoke adjustment has 10mm bolts for the Cortina and not half inch.

Austin Maxi steering rack if it has a mounting bracket threaded hole near the pinion just above to the side cant quite see, if you can send a clearer photo of that area then i can nail it for you,if not its a Austin 1100 seen a few of these in my past. used to recondition 40 a day of these now thats just blown my age lol.

put a bucket into basin.
Fill bucket to brim with tap water – making sure nothing spills into the basin.
make a cradle out of string/thread to support the lump and use a spring balance to check it’s weight in air.
Still on the balance lower it into the bucket so that it is immersed fully, note weight in water.
remove the bucket from the basin – taking care not to spill any more water.
finally measure the amount of water displaced from the bucket into the basin.
simple maths of weight in air – weight in water and volume of water displaced will give the specific gravity of the metal.
A trawl through the internet will give the best match for your measured SG against a specific material.

I don’t think it is lead, it isn’t soft and it doesn’t feel as heavy as I first thought, it was a bit exaggerated on my part!
By: Southern Air99 - 3rd July 2018 at 14:40
I haven’t tried that actually, I don’t have any way of doing so I don’t think.
I hope it isn’t lead, I’ll have to get rid of that quick sharp if it is!

The new piece looks too clunky and crude to have come from an aircraft, but I’m no expert. It looks a bit like lead, which would explain the surprising weight for the size of the item, but again I’m no expert. Can you pass an electric current through it?
By: Southern Air99 - 3rd July 2018 at 13:31
Ah yes, I mean the latest piece I found, the first one we identified, and you’re right!
I’m curious about this smaller bit I uncovered.
Thank you anyhow!

Looks close?

I take it it isn’t then, one can only ask I suppose.

Another find from the same location.
Found this wrapped around a small branch, embedded in an oak tree.
May not even be metal as it has some cracking on it, but its heavy enough!

Also found some little bits but they’re probably unidentifiable they’re so small.

Blast, I’m not surprised though, was found quite near a road. Someone must’ve dumped it or had a prang at some point. I left it where it was anyhow.

100% steering rack off a car, looks like it’s off a Ford Escort/Cortina

Steering rack off a car. Probably! Always worth an ask.
