Aircraft variants

Hello guys and gals 🙂

Still ploughing on with the gun camera films, and have another question. When referring to an aircraft’s variant within a particular mark e.g. a Spitfire MkVb, should the B be in lower or upper case?

(Hope I’ve worded this correctly, know what I want to say but the wording does not look right!)

Many thanks in advance
Becka

Oh dear!

It appears that both upper and lower case were in use on official ‘Air Publication’ documents.

I think Pierre Clostermann referred to a “Spitfire VD” somewhere in The Big Show, although I haven’t read it in a few years to be sure.

Spitfire MkIs, though, I’ve seen as Ia or IB

Upper case.

“Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V B”

The issue starts to come in with later marks XVIE and the like, and I think the trend for using a smaller font, but upper case crept in to avoid muddling letter and roman numerals. Another reason why the use of roman numerals as a stupid pretentious over-classically-trained idea. The early PR Spits starting with the letters (e.g. ‘D’) didn’t help, but at lease someone avoided the Spitfire VD.

The case in point.

Becka

On the Mk V it should be upper case capitals.

I refer to the MK V AP 1565E Vol 1 and also the Pilot’s Notes.

I believe in lower case, that’s how it usually seems to be written
