Airfix 1/48th Spitfire IX?

Had an e-mail from one of the Yahoo Spitfire groups, stating that Airfix maybe releasing a 1/48th Spitfire MkIX in the not too distant future.

I’m seeing lots of ‘noise’ about this new release from Airfix, but nothing really of substance. Does anyone know for sure how much of this kit is going to be new and how much will be re-cycled Mk.Vb/c kit? I’d really like to see something like the Mk.22 quality kit, but I stand ready to be disappointed.

I know they had a Spitfire VIII a few years ago (which I’d never got around to acquiring!!), so I presume this might be the same kit, but with parts for a MkIX?

Spitfire IX from Airfix

Hannants are showing as a future release – been some discussion on Hyperscale today about it

given the “quality” of the recent Seafire III,which made Classic Airframes kits look mainstream, I wouldn’t hold out any great shakes. Perhaps it will be the new “C” wings from that kit with a new fuselage or (perhaps) a new nose to stick onto the existing VB fuselage. The Spit VIII was an old Otaki mould and was missing the characteristic gull wing effect towards the rear of the fuselage/wing join

Time will tell – but I don’t suggest buying sight unseen

Hyperscale will undoubtedly give you all you need to know in due course.
