Sywell Aviation Museum have long been on the look-out for a Chipmunk and thanks to the kind offices of Mr David Burke we found one – but more importantly one which was based at Sywell!
David kindly tipped us off about a PAX cockpit section with 1053 Armthorpe ATC and following some discussion we collected it yesterday – she is on permanent loan to us and is superb condition, being very complete inside c/w sticks, pedals, panels, instruments etc.
419’s history is being investigated at present but we know this much:
De Havilland DHC-1 Chipmunk T.10 WG419
Manufacturers Serial No C1/0493
PAX8209M
Delivered 9.10.1951
4 BFTS and 6 RFTS Sywell
15 RFS
Birmingham UAS
Aberdeen UAS
CFS
Oldenbury Station Flight (Germany)
Gutersloh ditto
Ahlhorn ditto
Laarbruch ditto
S.O.C. August 1972 given ground instructional number 8206 M (PAX)
Careers Information Office, Sheffield – based RAF Finningley
Damaged in Hangar collapse Jan 1984
Handed to 1053 ATC for refurbishment
Aug 2007 to Sywell Aviation Museum
Herewith some pics of her before transportation, the handover and arrival at Sywell….the only way to celebrate was a delightful pootle about in Chipmunk T.10 G-BBMV! 🙂
Our thanks to David Burke and all at 1053 ATC for their kind help and assistance (oh and Pooh Redding for the flight! 🙂 )
The PAX is to be refurbished and installed in the new Museum extension in 2008 as a ‘hands on’ exhibit.
If ANYONE has any pics of WG419 please please do email me!
Cheers
Ben

Well done once again Ben and co.
Have always had a soft spot for the Chippie. Was the first aircraft type I ever flew in, and the first of many I threw up in as well. 😉
Take no notice to those mocking you. I bet when no ones around they also sit in the aircraft pretending to be flying and shooting down the enemy.
Only difference is you were daft enough to get caught. :p
NEVER!! We’ve got a BE2 to do that in!!!:D

Yes, Blue Max said he’d heard “vrooom, vrooom, tacca-tacca-tacca” noises coming from next to his workshop. He was about to call men in white coats! :diablo:

Cheers Dave but she’s perfect as she is! BTW where is the dataplate on a Chippie!?
Ben,
The plate is located on the upper port side of the rear seat bulkhead, but below the locker door & facing forwards. Or in other words, it’s behind the pilot’s left shoulder. It should indeed say C1.f.0493
Cheers……..

LnS – I’m more concerned about her being next door to Blue Max’s workshop, someone’s already after an exchange for a U/S temp gauge on a flier! She’d only been there half an hour! 😮
Ahhh Mr Robin, you are too kind…. ‘I feel the need, the need for pottering about quite sedately actually enjoying a glorious day to be airborne!’ 😀
