Air Gunners Association’s standard to be laid up at the Yorkshire Air Museum

THE national banner of the former Air Gunners Association is to be “laid to rest” at the Yorkshire Air Museum in a poignant ceremony this week.

St George’s Day has been chosen to lay up the standard at the museum in Elvington, in accordance with the wishes of the national association, which was wound up in 2003.

The ceremony is expected to attract veterans from around the country and will feature a flypast by a Dakota from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

Ian Richardson, of the Yorkshire Air Museum, said: “The ceremony will also provide a very moving occasion for visitors to enjoy, in what will probably the final gathering of veteran air gunners in significant numbers, who will no doubt be sharing a few memories and renewing old acquaintances.”

All veteran air gunners are being invited to the ceremony, which takes place at the museum, at 11am on Friday.
