Airline Passenger Information (API)

As many of you must already know, to travel to Spain, Morocco or Switzerland requires passengers to enter their API (Additional Passport Information) prior checking- in. This applies to all airlines, from Ryanair to Iberia.

When booking a recent easyJet flight to Amsterdam, it came to my attention that as of last month, passengers travelling to Germany, The Netherlands, France and Italy must also provide their API.

My question is, why do passengers travelling from an E.U country to another E.U country require to enter their API to the airlines? And why is it that if you do not enter this information, and arrive at the airport to check-in, you will be refused travel. I find it quite harsh- especially for less knowledgable flyers. Is this just another ‘Big Brother’ scenario? Or perhaps its a way to inhance our security across Europe.

Just wondering….. :p:confused:

It is not that case at all. The only country that you must provide Airline Passenger Information is when you travel to Spain. For other countries in Europe you do not need to provide this information.

Maybe, I was just wondering, as this is what was read on the FAQ on easyJet:

”As a result of new legislation from the EU, all passengers travelling from the UK, Switzerland and Morocco to Spain and since the 4th of February 2009 those travelling from/to the UK to/from Cyprus, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Italy, Malta, Netherlands and Turkey are required to provide Additional Passenger Information (API).”

Is this not becoming the norm now? Even my parents have been asked to provide such details to Qatar Airways, which they have never been asked to do before.

THat certainly wasn’t the case on my Lufthansa flights last month… Or maybe LH is just nicer than the cheap-and-nasty-airlines and collects the passport data at checkin
