RE: Airliner crash
I have seen on the news the report of the crash and the rescue of the victims. No burns, no fire on board…..so the explosion happened in cruising. So let´s summarize. Should the plane had encountered a missile…..there would have been fire. A bomb on the plane; I would expect a pilots warning….Total structural failure..unlikely since the plane was checked by Lufthansa in a regular maintenance program. So I suppose something wrong with dangerous cargo could have occured or an explosion in the tanks. Just ideas. These are crashes which make you consider not getting on a plane for the rest of your life.

RE: Airliner crash
I remember that China airlines was reported as the most dangerous airline for a while, they´ve been operating without accidents for a number of years.. until yesterday.
It´s very sad and I´m afraid will never know what happened with this flight.

RE: Airliner crash
I believe it was the central fuel take been left empty for this short internal flight leaving it full of vapours. On the shorter segments the wing tanks only are pressurised. If before take off the tanks were not pressure stabled then at high altitude the tanks can expand and heat can build-up, or sparks from a stray wire can cause a catosrpic explosion.

RE: Airliner crash
But I am still suspicious about the posibility of a terrorist attack. China is not popular for terrorist groups, but Taiwan…….I don´t know. A missile which got uncontrolled is more feasible to me. Both Chinese are denying it too quickly….suspicious isn´t it?.

RE: Airliner crash
It does appear that an explosion took place, what sort of explosion is uknown,it could be sabotage or massive mechanical failure,I believe that the plane in question was on it’s last flight with China Airlines after having been sold to a Thai company for 1.25million USD,so it should have been in reasonable condition,It was a 22 year old 747-200.From a pilots point of view i think there was a massive explosion which renderd the jet in operable, the passengers probably died from the explosion more than anything else, hence no mayday or sos calls.

RE: Airliner crash
China Airlines had appointed Lufthansa to consult on safety issues, focussing on maintainance I believe.
This leads me to think the aircraft would have been in reasonably good condition.

RE: Airliner crash
Well lots of different things. The main one, TWA had a reasonable good safety standards and maintenance and China Airlines a terrible one. So anything could happen. I wanted to travel to China and these crashes are being devastating for my confidence in their planes.

RE: Airliner crash
it appears there may have been a major explosion on board, as ‘cable network TVBS showed footage of farmers in the western coastal county of Changhua, about 75 km (47 miles) from the crash site, holding up scraps of foam padding and inflight magazines bearing the airline’s logo.’, according to Reuters.
Seems to me very similar to TWA 800.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-05-02 AT 11:46 AM (GMT)]Yes…ver sad news. latest developments say that there are no expected survivars. I find till now none of the chinese airlines are safe. They do have new era jets but the pilots are still trained as they were 10 years ago.

RE: Airliner crash
Yup very sad news,my thoghts are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones.
China Airlines doesn’t have the best safety record in the world,in the late 1990’s another CA aircraft crashed at Taipei airport.
