Unlike most military planes, there doesn’t seem to be too many airliners with nicknames. Do you know of any?
Here are some that I could think of:
Airbus A320: Plastic Puppy
Avro 748: Budgie
Douglas DC-3: Goony Bird
Douglas DC-7C: Seven Seas
Douglas DC-8: Diesel Eight
Hawker Siddley Trident: Gripper
Lockheed Constellation: Connie
Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer: Twin Pin
Shorts 330/360: Shed
Of course there are fmr-Soviet transports with NATO names that I wont list here.

Here’s a “Super Budgie” going… .ahem…. tech, yesterday at GLA ! The Loganair pilot I was chatting with described the A319 as “The electric powered tiny jet”

Stick some new engines and a “go faster” tail on the Avro 748 of 1959, and then call it “Advanced” – deserves all the stick it gets.

Nationwide Air – you misunderstand me – I am not disputing the nickname of the BAC1-11. I was just being a wee bit childish and having a laugh at the other meaning of ‘pocket rocket’ – please don’t be offended…..

Hi,
Duesseldwarf, it was known as the “Pocket Rocket”. Take a look at this BAC-1-11 website. http://home.clara.net/gab/home.html

Pocket Rocket? – that’s something else much less avionic to me!!
At Gill Airways, you’d often hear the Short 360 being reffered to as “That F*cking Thing!” by the passengers, as a sign of their disappointment of flying on the Flying Coffin/Flying Caravan/Flying Wardrobe/Flying Shoebox etc etc etc. The letters of complaint about the Shorts aircraft often kept me amused!
Dunno if this is a industry wide thingy or not either, but I’ve heard of the DC10 at Monarch being called the Death Cruiser

Not forgetting Crossair’s naming policy…
146 Jumbolino
Saab 2000 Concordino
and there was talk of the Embraer 170/190’s being called Sambolinos… (I *think* this idea was ditched when Swiss was formed, though)

747: jumbo
737: pig
777: Tripleseven, triple, tresette.
MD80: mad dog
DC3: dakota

Some that I’ve heard around the airport:
CRJ – Skidoo (a reference to their Bombardier heritage and their shallow climb outs)
Jetstream – Lawndart
Metroliner – San Antonio Sewer Pipe
PC-12 – Pilatypus (a reference to their PT-6 engines resembling the duck bill of a platypus)
Twin Otter – Tw’otter

I don’t know if the 737 was ever called Fat Albert, but the Boeing 747 was. It seems that the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy also has that nickname.

i read somewhere that the 737-200 was nicknamed ‘Fat Albert’, because its wingspan is almost exactly the same as it fuselage length, and makes it look chubby. am i right?
thanks,
adam
