The recent edition of an aviation magazine here in the US had that question as one of their trivia questions. They gave this as the answer:
KLM was formed on October 7th, 1918 and began service on May 18th, 1920. Australia’s Quantas is the second oldest.
I think with a lot of the other stated airlines they can trace there roots back quite far but they’ve changed ownership, merged, changed names, etc… KLM has done none of that in their 96 years of existance.

TWA, or Trascontinental and Western air as it was known (as GD has stated)predates KLM by some years. And I beleive British Imperial Airways, later BOAC, later British Airways predates that.
So in short, no KLM is not the oldest airline. Though many fans do try and state otherwise.
I beleive the oldest airline trophy goes to Avianca.

What was formerly Trans World Airlines that is only 10 letters? TWA originated as Transcontinental and Western Air.

BTW, when on the subject of cross words. Who agrees with me that the oldest continuous airline is not the airline that KEY gives as an answer. The oldest airline is KLM!
