Airlines on the Australia – United States Route

Ok firstly we all know there are 3 airlines doing this route Qantas, Air New Zealand and United Airlines.
Im just wondering why doesnt someone like American Airlines or Continental want to open up on the route, i was think for aa is because they are happy serving it as a codeshare with qantas operating, but still why, unless there is not enough demand, could someone let me know?
