Airport closed for 3 years after President's visit.

The airport MAY reopen after one of the President’s support aircraft, a Globemaster landed on the ‘soft’ runway three years ago. The airport is Las Cruces, New Mexico. Wasn’t there a similar incident in Australia?

You’re right Steve, sorry to cast any dispersions on Oz. What was in the back of my mind was the boondoggle called Canberra International Airport and the $8.8 million necessary to upgrade a runway to accommodate the likes of President Bush. You can see the connection.:D

Yes another example of wasted tax payers funds by Howard and his band of over spending underachievers

Seems odd a C-17 would do that much damage. I’d argue that the runway probaly wasn’t built well to begin with.
It’s Probably the way for the city to get the feds to pay for runway resurfacing (not that they don’t anyway).

Don’t forget the armour protected vehicles the C-17 was probably carrying but yes, any excuse for a federal handout.

Edit. The thread title is not 100% correct as the airport, KLRU, has two other operational runways.

If you’re referring to an aircraft damaging a facility it’s happened before.

A well known radio personality (an idiot who was recently fired) was being profiled by CBS TV. He has a share in a Gulfstream and had it land at a small strip in New Mexico so the film crew could show him looking at his gazillion acre ranch.

They parked the plane and it sunk into the hot tarmac while parked.
The fractional ownership jet company had to send another G-5 to get him and the film crew. The other jet was there for awhile.

Seems odd a C-17 would do that much damage. I’d argue that the runway probaly wasn’t built well to begin with.
