The regional airports shouldn’t hold their breaths,at least thats what we have been told. The new runway at LHR won’t open till around 2011,though it is a of light for us.

RE: Airport expansion plans unveiled

in the south east

heathrow – looks like it will get a samll runway

gatwick – hasn’t got anything, they have almost 0% unemployment and area is green belt

stanstead – could get 3 more runways – this will really piss people off, but make it bigger than heathrow, esp if easyjet move from luton

cliffe – i don’t want these nosey planes in my back yard (i live VERY close) }>

seriously – its a marsh in the middle of nowhwere, they would neeed new motoways (the a2 is already jammed), new rail (its an old branch line for goods), unemployment in’t a big problem here.

manston – runway is there, there is lots of unemplymetn in thanet (some of the highest in kent), its is really big (takes concord), road and rial liks already in place, etc

so why no mention of manston ???

The principal economic arguement is that the UK, mainly London, can remain an international crossroads. Companies locate in London partly because air links to the rest of the world are pretty good.

I would think it would be necessery for the UK economy because it encourages for tourists to fly in to the country and also more Brits to go on holiday. If we have good airports more buisness’ might set up in the UK as well.Thousands of jobs being created from the expansions as well.

RE: What About Belfast?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-07-02 AT 03:20 PM (GMT)]Increase at Manchester will cause massive protests from the surrounding area which is green-belt, plus the residents of such well-healled areas as Knutsford, Alderley Edge and Mobberley.

RE: What About Belfast?

Scotland’s population flies more than anywhere else in the UK, bar the South East.

GLA desperately needs the rail link sorted out (I’ve been in correspondance with both my MP and MSP about pushing that to the SRA)

EDI does too, allegedly, but EDI I don’t think has the terminal capacity for much expansion.

RE: What About Belfast?

The cost of buliding the new London airport would be offset by the demolition of LHR and LGW, surely. That land would be worth a fair bit.

RE: What About Belfast?

What about Belfast? The International airport could do with some money to improve as it needs a new terminal, (i mean renovate old one) and new gates. It is ever expanding airline wise.

easyJet operate to AMS, EDI, GLA, LTN, LVP (increase to seven daily flights from 5) and under go they also will go to BRS and STN. easyJet are also, aparently told by airport staff, opening a Malaga route from BFS because Northern Ireland is easyJet’s best place of trade according to them. N. Ireland sells the most tickets via internet and the most tickets with the size of the population.

Ryan Air are soon to set up with another STN route but also going to possibly a european destination, (Spain or France and possibly Dublin once set up) but these are rumors from airport staff (but STN as green light).

Lots of Charter flights go daily from the airport (AIr 200 and My Travel the most) and cargo operations are very strong. Daily DHL, Royal Mail and Atlantic Airways (or Airline, they were featured in AW issue currently out).

ALl above is Aldergrove (EGAA/BFS also called Belfast International) but some might forget BElfast City (EGAC/BHD) which is growing at a wild rate.

THe new terminal at Belfast is coping with passengers but isnt with the planes! bmi moved to city from aldergrove after new city airport was opened. THere is only one (very tight fit) stand (04) which a A320/321 can fit in and that drastically limits the number of flights a day (bmi flights). If we were to knock down the old terminal and build a new one with better stands for much larger aircraft or build one across the field, easyjet, ryanair or charter flights might consider moving down since Aldergrove is very old and is getting grotty as there are limited natural lighting in arrivals which makes it feel dull.

RE: Airport expansion plans unveiled

It’s crazy all of it – I don’t think they could squeeze any more air traffic into the skies of Britain if they tried.

I don’t agree with any of it at all (sorry for sounding so negative) but how often do we hear of near misses? Only the other day over Brighton a Swiss aircraft was just 15 seconds away from colliding with A British Airways aircraft.

I thought Air Traffic in the skies of Britain was going to be dramatically reduced – how is adding more runways and terminals going to assist this?

I reckon Heathrow is being made larger because they want to remain the “busiest international airport in the world”. To the British Government it’s a competition adn they’re not really thinking how this will affect our skies.

RE: Airport expansion plans unveiled

I doubt the new airport in London would get the go ahead.Cliffe is far too expensive and the economic benefits are pretty low.The only good options in south east England are new runways at STN and LHR.
I was surprised that Manston was mentioned in these plans, even if it were just for cargo.

RE: Airport expansion plans unveiled

Seems like a toss up between lots of airports, or the new airport in Kent.

I’d favour the first option, but to be honest I doubt in Britain today whether the necessary infrastructure will be there. Let’s go for a brand new London airport!
