Airport’s new name misses target
Thousands have signed a petition opposing the name
More than 11,000 people have signed a petition opposing the name of South Yorkshire’s new airport.
The former RAF Finningley is being redeveloped into a commercial airport and has been named Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport by its owners.
But Doncaster councillor John Mounsey is leading the campaign to get the name changed to Doncaster Finningley Airport.
An airport official said the rebranding would bring prosperity to the area.
Insult to people
Cllr Mounsey said: “What’s getting up the nose of thousands of people is that they supported Peel Holdings in the inquiry into the [need for the] airport.
“We are fully behind the airport, but they should have had the decency to consult with the people of Doncaster before they came up with the name.
“We’re the ones who are going to use this airport, it’s our town and it’s an insult to the people of Doncaster.”
This is a commercial decision, we have to make this airport work
Sharon Bennett, airport spokeswoman
Sharon Bennett, the airport’s marketing and community manager said: “This petition is old news, it was raised in April and we thought we’d addressed the issue then.
“We’re very happy with the effect the rebranding has had with commercial airlines and the aviation industry.
The name Robin Hood is being welcomed by the general public, particularly abroad.
“It has to be appreciated the name of an airport has a job to do, it has to raise awareness not only of the airport, of the whole area.
“If Robin Hood airport is to bring jobs to the area it has to have some commercial impact.
“This is a commercial decision, we have to make this airport work.”
The airport is due to open in the spring offering flights to a large number of European destinations.

You’re right Teesside’s name change was ridiculous but i think that they changed if for foreign travellers. Then again, ask a french man where Durham is and they’ll stare at you blankly. 😉

Given that Robin Hood is a semi-fictional character to begin with, I’d take the “evidence” on the website with a pinch of salt to be honest.
Whatever next? Newquay “rebranded” as “King Arthur International”? 😉

This has been debated alot already. The airport website shows the Robin Hood links; I (incorrectly) thought Robin Hood had no links to Doncaster until I looked here..
I can partly understand the reason why the locals want the airport re-named as Doncaster/Finningley. But realistically this won’t happen. The airport has to carry a name of a city/area that is recognised abroad(to generate more inward travel) and Finningley is hardly known in most parts of England. The airport is also not in Doncaster so I see no problem calling it Doncaster/Sheffield.(Robin Hood is a bit ott though) Let’s face it this policy has worked well for Ryanair. I don’t agree with all their destination names but it draws the customers which is the most important factor.

What the hell has Robin Hood got to do with Doncaster anyway?
According to their website Robin Hood actually spent most his time around Doncaster. But if Nottingham East Midlands change their name to Robin Hood Intl then it would be better suited.

It always escapes how some people think that the name of an airport will somehow magically “bring prosperity to the area”.
I mean, does some idiot somewhere think that calling the place “Doncaster Finningley Airport” will conjour up hordes of foreign visitors hungry to hurl their dollars, euro, yen or whatever at Doncaster? Or that these putative benefactors would hurl it elsewhere if the airport were otherwise named?
It’ll always be Finningley to me and, I suspect, to a lot of others too.
