As my last thread turned into a “What rearly irritates me”, here’s one to vent your spleen.
Airshow things that rearly irritate me.
Having annoying press people and dolly birds being shown around the aircraft before the show so the fee paying public can’t get a clear shot.
The annoying press people who seem to want to photograph every rivet at extreeme closeup.
The press enclosure that gets in the way even though the press have a press day and most of them are just using it a an excuse to fill their own albums (like Duxford needs promoting, right). Incidentallt why do the press wear high vis yellow, like they might get hit by a low flying plane.
Using junk as chocks. Leaving the covers on.
Getting into a rearly good position only to have a Rental van or fuel bowser park in front.
Having large aircraft parked close to the barrier and small ones far away.
Formations that take forever to formate and then only make one pass, usually at high speed.
Not taxying the full length of the airfield so everyone can get a shot.
Having unusual aircraft (like the Ju52 and me108) parked in places so you can’t get a good shot.
etc, etc

RE: Airshow Irritations!
Having attended the wessex Farewell at Akrotiri yesterday I realised what what was wrong in comparison with UK airshow’s….the position of the Sun. I found that a load of airshows I used to go to, I’d take umpteen films worth of piccies only to get them developed and find that whatever I was photographing was in silhoute (or however the hell its spelt !).
It made a refreshing change to have the sun behind the ‘crowdline’ cos everything was bathed in brilliant light and I got some cracking shots. If you see what I mean.
However, I fully realise that where the spectators are gonna sit doesnt really rate very highly in the the airfield planners list of things to do !
cheers
Gary

Wives of VIPs, with their 3yr old kids, that get to sit in the cockpit even if she knows nothing about aviation (and doesn’s care as well) and the kid is too young and too scared to remeber anything…

RE: Airshow Irritations!
Hi Steve, I raised both programme and admission costs, I understand the reasons for the admission cost ie fuel insurance etc. But how come the annual Dutch airshow (this year at Twenthe on the 21st June) is always free? Most USA military shows are also free.

RE: Airshow Irritations!
Returning to airshow irritations, I have two. Programme prices (which someone’s already covered) and 15 foot high loudspeaker stands being positioned along the front of the crowd line. I don’t take anywhere near as many shots now as I did a decade or so ago, but it still infuriates me to pan an immaculate run of a beautiful warbird, only to discover that you have a pair of loudspeakers disecting your photo. Surely it’s not outside the bounds of possibility to position them ten yards back…?
However to come back on a couple of points others have made;
– Music can be used to great effect. Eva Cassidy’s rendition of ‘Somewhere over the rainbow’ made for a very touching tribute to Guy Bancroft-Wilson at Flying Legends 2001.
– Cost of British airshows. Many organisers would dearly love to reduce the admission prices. Sadly, that’s not possible with all the ever increasing operating costs – fuel, emergency services, insurance, appearance fees, normal day to day running costs of the aircraft… I could go on and on, but you’ll be delighted to hear I won’t…. 😉
By the way, a belated Happy New Year to all, sounds like the Duxford Bash went very well. 🙂

On that idea , what was the name of the only Scotsman who flew fighters for the Luftwaffe in WW2 , his Germanised name will do .

RE: Airshow Irritations!
A chap called Ken Adam was involved in a bunch of Bond films as a production designer. See here: http://www.artofjamesbond.com/adam.htm
That is Ken Adam, as in Klaus ‘Heine’ Adam, a Typhoon pilot with 609 (West Riding) Squadron.

So, who knew that then? Eh? Show of hands.
Also, the only German fighter pilot on the British side I believe.
609 kick ass again.

Aye- and for all its over the top stunts and effects, it just doesn’t have the kudos of Goldfinger, Thunderball et al. Yup, I know its getting away from the forum business, but I just wanted to air my view.

RE: Airshow Irritations!
I was too busy watching Halle Berry but yes it does look like an MD500 , probably the most “way over the top ” Bond ever.

RE: Airshow Irritations!
Went to see the latest Bond.
He does get to fly some cr*p NOTAR eggbeater, but looking at the rotor I think it has been trimmed to fit inside an Antonov. Not sure it would fly too good outside of Pinewood.
Halle Berry? What is she for? Didn’t she get an Oscar for something – it must have been won horizontally, couldn’t have been for her acting ability.

Sorry, this should probably have been a new thread
