Airshow pictures from the sixties

I grew up in the sixties and find pictures of aircraft on show from this decade to be far more interesting than shows from now, although I do still enjoy going to shows (I’ve been to well over 130).
Has anyone got any more pictures from this time or even the forties and fifties? The types, units and colour schemes were so much more varied than now. Cottesmore 1965 and 1966 would be fantastic as I was a lad there at the time and seeing Vulcans close up really got me interested in aircraft.

Ian,

I can confirm there was no Battle of Britian show at Cottesmore in 1966.

Albert,

Lovely shots as always!

Ahh – the Raleigh “Blue Streak” … mine was a Raleigh “Redwing” … my current Kestrel 200Sci weighs half what the Redwing did!

A bit off-thread, sorry, I just got carried away … I love the smell of Carbon Fibre!

I still have the remains of the Blue Streak in my garage, including a frame that I found in a skip in Bishop’s Stortford, all I have to do is put it back together and cycle back to Tollerton with my camcorder.
Yes it does weigh a ton.

I digress!

I was at the 1967 Kings Cup Air Race at Tollerton, at the west end of the runway on my brothers Raliegh Blue Streak racing bike, ….

I was at the 1967 Kings Cup Air Race at Tollerton, at the west end of the runway on my brothers Raliegh Blue Streak racing bike, must have been around the time that it was smashed to pieces in a collision with a Lamberetta, I landed in a hedge and survived intact. For some reason I didn’t have my camera with me that day, which was unusual for me, I must have been out on a bike ride and come across the air race by chance, nice to see pictures of the P-51 after all this time. I always thought that Sheila Scott won that event.
I saw the Blue Angels at Hucknall in 1973, they were flying low over the M1, which must have caused a few near accidents, I remember that the Red Arrows were pretty sensational that day as well, unfortunately the brand new Zenit-E, which I bought the day before the event decided to jam so I was unable to take any pictures, it must have been the built in Russian factor.
I have previously published some 60’s airshow shots on other threads, however I am trying to get my hands on my brothers collection which I hope to publish on here when I see him.

The centre of the roundel does look a bit green – you weren’t using Fujicolour at the time were you Gordon? 🙂

Roger Smith.

IIRC it was Kodak Ektachrome 64ASA – probably a combination of my scanner & PhotoShop! I have some more taken the same day … I’ll post when I have the time to scan & clean them.

I think you will find that he is:

Interesting. Will try to contact him, and see if he can relate anything in regard to whether or not the 51 was used in the movie, where it was filmed etc. As for your earlier request for a photo of it in the civilian colors it wore earlier, this can be found on the warbirdregistry.

Sir Charles Masefield

Great to see the photos of the P-51D. I would agree that it looks like it was used in “The Mercenaries” which was also called “Dark of the sun”. From the few glimpses of it in the movie I thought it had Swedish roundels, which would tie in nicely with the UN presence, but since several guys remember the roundels and origin I’ll believe it. From the b/w film at britishpathe.com I just assumed N6356T wore British colors during the race. Nice to tie up loose ends though!

To the other part of my original question, does anyone know if Masefield is still alive?

Bah, that was the week before the Paris Air Show and we came down from Scotland but didn’t do East Anglia until the trip back. The Angels had moved on by then. 🙁

Blue Angels at Bentwaters

I know it was May 1973 – the month I got married(!) – but I couldn’t resist slipping this shot in.

Somehow the Red Arrows have never been the same …..

Charles Masefield’s Mustang

N6356T took part in the Kings Cup Air Race in both 1967 and 1968. Both races were held at Tollerton. The 1967 event was held on 19 August and it’s winning speed was 277.5 mph.

For the 1967 event it was painted a grubby white with Green/White/Orange roundels & fin flash – the paint was an emulsion style paint which was cracking off when I examined it at Kidlington on 2 September 1967 (you remember Roger … we were all there from MAPS!).

I’ve attached a shot of it taxying back after its display routine, the VC-10 was XV102.

The second shot shows it participating in the 1968 Kings Cup, held at Tollerton on 24 August 1968 (we were there again Roger!) – note the red & white colour scheme which replaced the film colours. No beating the handicappers this time, the race was won by Sqdn Ldr F R E Hayter in Hornet Moth G-ADKM at a speed of 121 mph!

IIRC when it first arrived in the UK it wore a US civil scheme with the regn in large letters on the fuselage – anyone got a picture.

PS – Sorry about the photo quality, pre-telephoto I’m afraid!
