Airshows @ PIK

Can anyone please tell me why they stopped having airshows at Prestwick International as i remember as a bairn (Small Child) being taken to airshows there every other year and loving it.

Wish they would bring them back then i could take my Grandson like my dad used to take me.

I remember them being great too. Only 40 minutes down the road as opposed to several hours as it quite often takes now to get to one. Also remember the last one (at least I think it was) as the B-24 (can tell what forum I normally use) was supposed to be it’s first appearance on it’s UK tour – unfortunately a no show.

Might not be of interest to some of you but I was reading that Air Atlantique are considering replacing their (bi-annual?) air show at Coventry with some similar events round the country in airshow starved locations. Could end up with something else north of the border!

I made some enquiries about the PIK airshows and it seems they were stopped for various reasons including, lack of sponsorship, members of the organisation team being head hunted for other shows, lack of specialised ATC controllers, the lack of public parking space due to expansion of the Jetstream production line and apparently a new base commander at HMS Gannet didn’t believe in the Navy open days which alternated with the International Airshow.

There have also been attempts to reinstate the show over the years but these have failed because of many of the same reasons above. I understand there may be another attempt to organise something in the future though… 😀

You won’t find many airshows with anything of interest to commercial fans!

RAF Leuchars holds an airshow every year.

Not a lot to see for commercial fans but a great day out and only a few weeks away too.

It was a PAX airport then as well, and they finished long before Ryanair were around. These were the days when PIK had Scottish transatlantic status, so there were quite a few PAX flights coming and going during the displays.

Could always divert them to GLA if thats the reason just for the time the airshow is on

Because it is now a pax airport with over 2million pax a year, i doubt Ryanair would be happy with an airshow

They had the Scottish International Airshow every second year and the HMS Gannett open day inbetween.

I used to go to them too, no idea why the stopped them mind you ? My favourite memory was when a departing Northwest Orient 747 decided to do a circuit and then flypast along the runway at an amazing speed. Superb sight to see ! 😀
