A few days back I took my first walk around the gallery of the completed AirSpace hangar at Duxford
Looking down, what puzzled me was how small the Vulcan looked compared to the Concorde. The latter having a fuselage section with just four small seats and not that much bigger than a DC-3 section.

No. Viewed from on high it is about size.
The Vulcan looks very small, overall, for a ‘mighty’ aircraft.

It al depends. When I was young, the Airfix B29 dominated my bedroom ceiling. However, when I visited Duxford in the early 80s to view one for real, I found it parked in between a Vulcan and a Victor, reducing the B29 to well, a small aircraft in the shadows. That first impression is still with me as since I never found the B29 that big anymore. So it looks like the Vulcan is now “being reduced”, glad the B29 is in another hangar!

I’m coming back to the UK for the first time in four years and I WILL be going to Dx more than once! My first stop will be the Vulcan, I just hope they’ve repaired the jet pipes that were just rust and bodge tape the last time I saw her. 😮

It’s about volume as much as anything – the linear differences are multiplied when you looka t the sheer space the thing takes up.
And whilst the Concorde is only four abreast, the Vulcan was only 2 1/2 at best.
The underslung engines and consequently higher undercarraige also make Concorde seem much bigger.
Finally, if you’ve ever seen models of the two next to each other, Concorde IS much bigger!

A couple of images from Saturday to support my view.

Does anyone know why the Mosquito has what appear to be poorly made replica supercharger inlets?….. surely with the experese of the IWM and associated people, the correct items could be found or fabricated?….
Its a fabulous building, and its good to see so many aircraft indoors (and a concorde NOT in the centre of the building with all lights pointing to it). A job well done with alot of expansion display space.

Mark – it’s about length not width! The fuselage of the Concorde seats numerous passengers – the Vulcan just enough room for the flight deck and a bombay blended into the wing .

🙂 Have a look at this site http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mclaydon/
Click on the airspace link on the left hand side of the page,it has a plan diagram of the planes, and concord is certainly longer:)

The effect of scale is most noticeable when viewed from the far side gallery looking on the nose end of the Vulcan.
It was just a fleeting visit but I have promised myself a full photo-shoot in the near future.
I am not a fan of suspended aircraft…too permanent, but actually I was quite impressed with the layout with none of the overcrowding feeling you get at the American complex.

I posted some pics of the Vulcan that my in-laws took for me a couple of weekends ago, none of Concorde though sadly! I’ll email him and see if he’s got any others. See this thread.

Does anybody have a picture as I’m finding it very difficult to imagine this?
