I’ve had some threads going for a while about Airborne assets used by British (Gliders, Tugs and Para droppers), I’m starting this thread as I need some photo refs urgently (Like in the next week) to finish off part of a number of profile projects. The subject is the Airspeed Horsa Mk 1, Now I’ve been to Middle Wallop, Kew (for references from the AP) and Salisbury Hall, and have not been able to get any actuate information about some of the airframe (and a number of scale plans from a number of sources haven’t been much help either including the 1-72 scale kit). Only hope is Shawbury, but, I’ve not got the time to set up a visit (or a car to do it for the next few weeks). What I need is large photos of the port side of the replica Mk 1 at Shawbury (the shots on the Assault glider trust web sites is not good enough or are at the wrong angles).
What I’ve after in particular are good shots of the following.
Main undercarriage and skid mounts on the port fuselage (Got the AP drawings, but don’t know how much of the mounts are actually outside the fuselage).
Rudder Trim tab control arm and rods, port side
Rudder control arm and rods, port side
Port side Tail plane struts, Tailplane ends
Rear fuselage section, port side panels
Rear Nav light on rudder, port side
Main forward ramp and sliding door. Every set of plans is different. Need accurate proportions of the ramp to the door, window to door and the location of the door outer lock handles.
Location of the Wing skid’s and nav lights on the port wing, plus a good photo of both.
Elevator trim tab control arm and rods
Areas of fabric overlap on the port side Fuselage and tail.
Please PM for E-mail address (need big images, to do detail, profile is 90 cm long).
Regards
Richard

Just did the main halls on a Saturday when I got a window of opportunity (i.e. I was down that neck of the woods). Haven’t had the chance to set up a visit to the archives due to nature of my job, and this profile project deadline has been pulled forward quite a bit to try to support the organisation I’m doing it for (they would like it finished in two weeks). None of this has been helped by having the Car play up big time over the last few weeks.
It would be wise to ring in advance then if you want to visit the archives. I think their only open Wednesdays – although they made an exception in my case. You want to speak to Susan the curator, he number and email is on their website.

There are a few photos here http://forum.planetalk.net/viewtopic.php?t=5113. Hopefully one or two may be of use.
Indeed they are, Thanks for the link. Got a photo of the tow release gear fitted, knew what it looked like, didn’t know where it was fitted on the wing.
Be warned, as good a job as they have achieved on the Horsa at Shawbury there are one or two areas that are just not quite right in detail, and the main undercarriage fuselage joint is one of them, another is the cockpit framing.
To their credit the undercarriage has been done that way to ensure that the legs don’t self jettison at the wrong moment.
Its a pity that I’m still stuck in Arizona as I have a good selection of photos of the Shawbury Horsa back at home.
As I’ve noted, though thanks to pictures supplied by Kev35, I noted that there were a lot more differences between the nose of a Mk 1 and a mark II than I first thought.
Verm, you say you went to Wallop but did you just look around or actually visit the archives upstairs? Box 473 and 474 have *probably* got what you’re looking for.

Horsa
I have a few images of the Horsa at Shawbury which, although not exactly fitting your criteria, show port undercarriage mount and some general views of the cargo door. Whether they are of any use at all I don’t know but you are welcome to them.
