Airspeed Horsa Project

Hi guys i’m a newie.

I dont know if you are aware of the Horsa project at Shawbury but when I heard that a few surviving one way ticket army glider jockeys were going to build a full-size replica I almost fell over laughing. When they then said that after finishing the Horsa they would go on to build a Waco and a Hamilcar then I did end up on the floor.

Six months on however, the laugh is definitely on me.

Inside the hangar next to my office is the almost complete fuselage frame of an Airspeed Horsa.

These guys are doing what they promised. Working three days a week on a limited budget and the use of an original horsa fuselage section as a pattern, they hope to have a complete airframe on display at Cosford Museum in 12 to 18 months time.

I take my hat off to them – this is one big aeroplane.

No engine rebuilds to worry about though.

Anyone got any Horsa Bits?

Rotor, Don’t suppose you could get any photos?
Do you know if they will also do a DFS-9? (The German glider)

RE: Airspeed Horsa Project

I would guess it would be of such basic construction that they would take a lot quicker than most restorations.
