Airspeed Oxford Crash Saskatchewan

 Can anyone help with information about a crash on 24 November 1943 of an Airspeed Oxford. I do not have a serial number or exact location. Nor do I know the reason for the crash. The pilot was Sgt 1452698 Charles Edward Sowery RAF from Lancashire and I believe LAC Colin Gutteridge also died in the crash. Sgt Sowery is buried at Swift Current[Mount Pleasant] Cemetary, Saskatchewan. They were with No39 SFTS.

Any further info would really help and any phots would be considered a miracle.

A photograph of Guttridge’s grave can be found here:

Unfortunately there isn’t one for Sowery.

Thank you. That’s the man. A different spelling and rank but he is buried next to Sowery.

This has been a testing job. The relative who asked for my help wasn’t sure if the ‘Uncle Ted’ from childhood memories was called Sowery or Jacques so I had little hope. Especially as he thought he was flying a Spitfire. He knew he was teaching Polish pilots in Canada and where he was born. With all your help we now have a good base for him to do more research and get his service record etc.

This from Flight Global for Feb 10th 1944:

http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1944/1944%20-%200311.html

They are both listed in the right hand column towards the bottom and Guttridge is recorded as LAC.

Note the different spelling and the tie in of the dates?

Airspeed Oxford Crash Saskatchewan

Thanks Walshlee. I think this is a different accident but I appreciate your efforts. It’s COLIN Gutteridge that was in the a/c with Sowerly. I haven’t been able to find him on the CWGC site.

Records have been found in Ottawa

Annek,

The following RCAF Board of Inquiry would have been conducted shortly after the accident, and happened when a fatality was involved. These investigation papers are held at the National Archives in Ottawa and have been microfilmed. In many case a brief summary is found followed by an appendix with all found evidence that might lead to a cause of the accident. In many cases photos are included with these reports but the clarity and quality during the microfilm ofter leads to a poor quality print.

You can order a copy of this file at .25 to .50 cents a page. Their address is found on the NAC’s website at www.archives.ca

Here is the file info is:

Reference: RG24 , National Defence , Series E-1-b , Reel C-5939
File : 1300-X6954-1 , Access code: 90
File Title: Oxford II RAF Aircraft – Accident at Swift Current, Sask. – Sgt. Edward Sowery, LAC Colin Stewart Gutteridge
Outside Dates: 1943-1944
Finding Aid number: 24-100

RCAF/RAF Oxford aircraft X6954, sadly cannot give you the date of the accident. Somewhere I have the microfilm Reel C-?????? for No39 Service Flying Traingin School at Swift Current. This would give some minor info about the crash but the full RCAF BIA report is your best bet.
