We took delivery of the first of two Airworthy Merlins today, overhauled by EyeTech engineering.
The engine was kindly transported by BAB Distribution http://www.bushtyres.co.uk
from EyeTechs workshops at Eye.
The engine is zero houred and ready to be fitted straight to the Lancaster with firepipes, carb, mags, ignition harness, starter motor all fitted.

Whilst we are all indulging ourselves in healthy and excited idle speculation, please let me have another go:
The four engined bomber script isn’t a smoke screen for a two engined bomber project is it? Mid 2010 delivery for the second engine doesn’t suggest a particularly friendly delivery for a possible outrageous Jackson/Dambusters useage, given the other work required.
1. They haven’t commissioned a wooden fuselage from down under on the QT to mount these on perhaps?
2. They haven’t bought the Beaufighter off TFC on the QT and are preparing two Lanc power eggs in advance of converting it to a more CAA and parts/prop availability friendly Beaufighter II?? 😀
Next pls…

Crikey – engines would be way down my list of priorities if I were going to fly the thing. There’s an awful lot to do before attempting aviation.

So then Bruce what needs doing to this fine girl to get her up there?

Question from a non-expert type!, when an airworthy Merlin is stood like that all wrapped up nicely, how long does it stay airworthy for?.
Regards,
John.

Excellent! a nice source of spares for PA474:diablo:
If not then:confused::confused::confused::confused: as engines would be right down on my list of right what do we need to get/do next

So far the favoured bit of speculation is they’re installing the Merlin into the van to make it a high powered ice cream truck.
To miss quote a Benny Hill song,
“Merlin its drives the fastest ice cream cart in the west”
Sounds like interesting times for Just Jane and to be honest speculation may keep us warm through this cold spell :D.

Photos amended.
The engine is one of two currently on order with Eye Tech, the other is due mid 2010.
We are currently building up a good ‘spares’ quantity including 9 boxed prop blades earlier this year.

So will it or won’t NX611 be flying? And will the engines be inhibited until a major servicing is carried out?

That’s the engines sorted, now which UK outfit is installing the bomb bay/door mods and producing the mine and it’s deployment gear?

Surely they wont be able to just hang them on the airframe and go fly?

“Engine for a Triumph Spitfire guv, we had this in the back of the stores”. “Will it do”

Not sure if my computer is going blurred, but doesn’t that van say ‘Distributors to the fa*t fit industry’?;)
By: Flightpath - 17th December 2009 at 18:19
Judging by your pics your sending it back…:D.
Yep, going by the photo sequence it looks like it.
I hope there were secure tie-down points in the back of the van (after seeing the small wheels in the engine stand). I could just imagine the doors flying open and the merlin rolling off down the road (with Benny Hill chaseing it and the correct music playing of course):D
Maybe we can have some photos of the Merlin with the plastic off…. please:)
cheers from cold Norway (-12.5 outside right now),

This will put the forum ‘speculation mill’ into overdrive 🙂

My last “Taceval” was at BZN in 1994 or thereabouts; it was somewhat surreal as the exercise still clung very much to the “Cold-War” script. As I was the Sector Commander for the Bomb Dump and Fire Dump I knew I was in for some fun! Maxival (the practice) was worse in my opinion. Not long afterwards I was witness to one of the last HP Victors landing at Brize to take up residence on the same fire dump. I wish I had “liberated” some items from the cockpit before others did but, hopefully, some bits have since found good homes on or in preserved airframes.

Now I thought, in my naive ignorance, that swearwords and words of an offensive nature would be removed by the Mods (assuming the system had not deleted them anyway). How come, then, that the dreaded word “Taceval” is allowed on the Forum?
For those not ‘in the know’ a Taceval is an RAF Tactical Evaluation of a Base, or Unit. Extreme scenarios are dreamed up by the Distaff (Directing Staff – and it’s good fun to be one of them, rather than on the receiving end!) and then the Unit/Sqn/Base has to react as if they were on a War footing. There is – as many on this Forum will agree – a great deal of ‘foul play’, and ‘underhand dealings’. There are NO Queensberry Rules on Taceval!!!
HTH
Resmoroh
PS Only those who have been Tacevaled many, many, times ever rise to the Distaff level when you can inflict misery on others. Been there, done it!

Good news, amazing what a van can carry. I am amused by the ice cream placard on the cammo cabin behind, if only we had that available on Tacevals !
