JANE’S MISSILES AND ROCKETS – JANUARY 01, 2005
——————————————————————————–
Akash flies with a live warhead
India has successfully tested its Akash medium-range surface-to-air missile with a live warhead for the first time. Fired from a mobile launcher at the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur-on-Sea, near Balasore, on 30 November, the round engaged a moving target towed by a Lakshya pilotless target aircraft flying at an altitude of 4.5 km.
The trial was preceded by a launch on 26 November against a target dropped from a pilotless target aircraft. Further test firings were due to take place by the end of 2004.
Akash is being developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for use by the Indian Army and Air Force. It is one of the missiles being developed under India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP).
Similar in configuration to the Russian Kub (SA-6 ‘Gainful’), it weighs 700 kg at launch and is powered by an integrated ramjet/rocket propulsion system. The warhead is initiated by a radar proximity or contact fuze. It weighs 60 kg and has a lethal radius of 20 m.
The associated Electronic Research and Development Establishment (ERDE) Rajendra multifunction phased-array radar can simultaneously track several aircraft at a range of up to 40-60 km, providing the surveillance, target-tracking, missile-acquisition and missile-guidance functions needed by the Akash round. Maximum missile range is about 27 km.

Hey Thanks for correcting me !! Cheers for that one !

Trishul is a point defence SAM with a range of 9km. Main applications include short range land point defence and ship based defence against ASMs.
Akash is a totally different system primarily for medium range defence against aircraft.

Any how just to add… isnt the intended longer range SAM named as TRISHUL… just my guess.

The original KS-1 has a range of 42km and has been around for 15 years. The improved KS-1A has a range of 50km. Max altitude is 27km. 100kg warhead. Speed 1200 meters per second. Malaysia is the first export customer for the KS-1A.
The Akash has only half the speed, half the range, half the warhead weight, but is almost as big as the KS-1A.
Is the Akash a copy of the Russian SA-6
If one looks closely at Akash , It does use like SA-6 , and uses a Ramajet propulsion , but besides the look , it an entirely new class of SAM , It has a Max Range of 30 Km ( not sure of they are professing the truth on Range ) , max altitude of 15Km and max speed of Mach 3.5 ,Fom Detection to interception can be completed within 30 sec according to Dr Prahlad in an intervied to TOI It has state of the art ECM capability and its very mobile which amongst other is it strong points ( similar to what the US has planned for the CorpSam Project ) , The Improved version of Akash said to be in development since 1998 , will feature a larger booster , will has a longer Ramjet Burn Time , its max speed will more than Mach-4 . and will be capable of intercepting TBM travelling between mach 3-3.5 , and Max range will be more than 60 Km , this was said by kalam in an interview given to JIR some time in 1998.

Compared to China’s KS-1A it’s rather short ranged. The KS-1A weighs 900kg and has a range of 42kms and ceiling of 27kms.

it just means multi-purpose I suppose. Just works similar to both Phased Arrays you mentioned. Just some part of the array using its beam to scan, other parts to track. Best to have an active arrayfor that. Since otherwise your number of tracked targets will be reduced (certainly against stealth targets).

How is the multifunction phased arrar radar works? Compare to passive and active?

There was talk recently of an extend range (60Km) Akash. But the validating the 27km Akash-Rajendra-3D CAR system will certainly be a shot in the arm.
