After 54 years in service and 113 flight courses, the IDF/AF is finally retiring its ancient Piper Cubs in favour of new Grob G-120As. The new aircraft will be called Snunit, the Hebrew word for Swallow. The Swallows officialy entered service yesterday with an air force ceremony in Hatzerim.

Air force welcomes new Swallow aircraft for training
By Amnon Barzilai
The air force yesterday held a festive air display at the Hatzerim base for the reception of three Swallow airplanes – the new training aircraft for the air force’s flight training course.
The Swallow model will replace the Piper, which is retiring after 50 years of service. Elbit Systems has purchased 17 Swallows (G-120A) manufactured by Grob of Germany, which will be leased to the Israeli air force for use by the flying academy.
This is the first time the air force is outsourcing its flight training.
