AL-QAEDA have vowed to bomb the World Cup – with England players top of their hitlist.
The terror group pledged to target the match between England and the USA in South Africa in June, warning “hundreds” of fans could die.
A branch of al-Qaeda which last year killed British hostage Edwin Dyer, 61, in Mali made the threats.
They also vowed to target resorts, hotels and car parks used by supporters during the tournament. And they claimed explosive devices which cannot be detected by security scans would be used.
The threats appear on al-Qaeda-linked websites. A statement said: “How beautiful would the game between England and the USA be when broadcast live from a stadium full of spectators – when the sound of an explosion rumbles through the stands. The resulting death toll is in the dozens and hundreds – Allah willing.”
Security around England stars such as Frank Lampard is likely to be stepped up as they play in Cape Town and other cities.
The threats from al-Qaeda’s North African network were last night being taken seriously by terror experts.
No matter which Football player is guarded it’s down to South africa and its People to Protect the Venue and Other Area’s Just like we will have to do when we host the 2012 Olympics.

I agree with 27Vet. Its the crime that puts me off !
South Africa is some where I have always wanted to go. There are a few things I would like to see there. The Lightnings and Buccaneers (obviously), Table Mountain, the great Whites off the Cape ect.
…. but its to dangerous. Its not terrorists or extremist parties, its the crime on the streets. I dont want to be beaten and have my arm chopped off just for my watch, lose my life for the car I am in or be mugged by a gang of street kids !
I have been looking around a few travel story/advice websites. Some people who are there or have been there are saying that recently policing and security has been stepped up, especially in the major cities. Hopefully this will make things a little safer during the World Cup. Although I fear a small group of England fans or other foreign nationals will go looking for trouble and probably bite off more than they can chew.
As for a terrorist threat, it does not stop people using the bus, train, tube, airlines, everyday, and I dont think it will stop people in this case.
Any way…… Girlfriends dad will have his new 60″ TV in time for the World Cup so thats me sorted:):):):):):)

I won’t be going not due to Al-Qaeda more due to lack of money and the threat from the wife if I were to go 😀 .
To be honest you have to expect such a threat from them they need to put their propaganda out there and try and scare people.
You have to expect trouble from these extremists but lets not give them the credit or the publicity they crave if we can help it.

Our footballing ‘hero’s’ earn in a week what a trooper in Afganistan earns in a year.
It will be interesting if these ‘hero’s’ will step up to the mark when the time comes.
here here!!
dont have an interest in football these days anyway, due to the fans being inconsiderate, booze fuelled D!ck He@ds ( i know first hand from working as stadium security)

Shoppers scurry as bullets fly
This is more likely the danger – look at the weapons they are using : Read me
Pietermaritzburg – Pandemonium broke out as staff and customers ran for cover at a shop in Greytown when about 12 men armed with AK47s shot randomly, wounding a security guard and a shopper, during a dramatic cash-in-transit heist on Monday morning…

Rest easy…they won’t do it for fear of getting too much international ill-will.
As long as they just target America (and perhaps the UK) 95% of the world won’t care.

Knowing South Africa well, anything is possible. More likely racial tension after the murder of Terreblanche and the hate speech campaign against people of European origin by Malema. Personally I would support a complete boycott until the government shows that it is capable of promoting positive change, or there is a positive change of government. 😡

I wasn’t planning to go anyway. Maybe if they played a proper game I’d consider it. It’ll be the same as always the rest of the world playing football and England letting them. It will also be the usual case of too much hype and not enough performance.

I wouldn’t chance it, personally. I doubt very much if the SA authorities are up to repelling terrorist attacks as we are in Europe.

joking apart no it wouldn’t stop me the day it does they win and we insult the memory of those that have given thier lives so we can !!
the best course of action is if we all go and chant ” who the **** are al queeda ?? “
Mod Edit: Wishing for anyone to fall victim to terrorist attack – whether done in jest or not – is not acceptable here.
Please don’t do it again!

You beat me to it. My thoughts precisely – especially your second paragraph. And I shall be avoiding it on the TV as well, although no doubt the normal schedules will be decimated by matches on several channels and endless comment, speculation, and repeats. When’s it on? – a trip to a wilderness might be recommended.

It’s to be hoped that it’s just fundamentalists blowing off hot air. If not then hope the SA police are up to the job.
As to whether it’d put me off going? Nope. Never intended to fly halfway round the world to watch a bunch of overpaid blokes chase a bag of wind round a field for 90 minutes anyway thankyou! 😉

At least South African Police will shoot on sight and sort it out later. That’s the only deterrent to a would-be-bomber. Or perhaps a quicker way to Allahdom.
