Alan Cobham Air Display at Inverness video

The National Library of Scotland posted a new video on their Moving Image Archive today. A great quality movie of Alan Cobham’s National Aviation Day display at Inverness in 1932. It’s a little gem of a movie featuring HP33 Clive G-ABYX and Airspeed Ferry G-ABSI among others.

Given the attendance of both the HP33 and the Ferry I’d say it’s most likely the 1934 show which took place on 14th May.

I can’t imagine too many instructors with that qualification, Laurence!

Yes, Mothminor, but it was so good to see the pictures! Thanks again for that. Do we know what the real date was? I learned to fly on the Tiger Moth, but I was not shown how to pick up handkerchiefs.

Yes, I should’ve checked the date given on the NLS website – particularly as it does have an asterisk beside it! Must’ve got caught up in the excitement of seeing all those lovely old aeroplanes

And the Tiger Moth equipped for handkerchief snatching, G-ACEZ, was only registered in 3.1933.

Indeed you’re right, Oracal. G-AC– registrations not appearing till October 1932.

It’s very nice to see moving images of the Inverness (Longman) airfield again. However, the images are not from the 1932 National Aviation Day display. I’m sure some of the experts will figure out why – and what the correct date is.

Although now buried under an industrial site, today it is still possible to see one of the original Highland Airways hangars being used as a tyre repair facility.

I agree, Sopwith, that’s incredible flying. Looking at an old local newspaper clipping re. the 1935 display it looks like that “act” was changed a bit. It reads –

“The exhibition will include….what is described as “flying’s most difficult feat” by Mr Louis Rowley, who picks up with his wingtip a flag held in a man’s hand”

Which of those was “most difficult” I wouldn’t like to say!

Great film, very impressed with the Tiger Moth picking up the handkerchief with his wingtip.

Looks like it was a cold windy day. Notice how nearly everyone in the crowd had their hands in their pockets and shoulders hunched beneath their overcoats. – Reminds me of all the RAFA airshows at Woodford I used to go to.
