Alitalia

Hi,
I was shocked when i saw an Alitalia aircraft on ground, but in a very bad shape and a dirty aircraft. A country like Italy, i expected a good airline. It was a B747-200, I was actually out getting pics, but this Jet cought my eyes, and i had a thorough look at it. Has anyone here travelled with the, how are they??? I was not impressed with there ground mentainence. I have also seen no fleet upgradion in Alitalia in a long time.

Despite the negative comments, it´s a good airline. Not brilliant, a bit caothic, but a good one. I regret you have had such a bad flight.

I know a few people in the large Italian community in Melbourne, and apparently one reason why AZ withdrew from MEL (and Australia) is that people didn’t like to fly with them because of poor service. I suppose withdrawl of the 747 fleet might also have had something to do with it.

Any yes, their MD-80’s are absolutely filthy, at least the exteriors were when I walked post lots of them at LIN and FCO a few months ago.

Urgh! I flew Alitalia last week. I flew from Heathrow on an A321 and back on an MD-80 and I can safely say that they were far and away the worst airline I have ever flown with! There customer service is dismal, they accused me of lying over what time their check in desks had open (Which I can assure that I must certainly did not and incidentally 118 other people seemed to agree with me!). The actual flight there wasn’t too bad although the food was awful and we were delayed because they only opened the check in desk at 0508 for a 0615 departure.
The flight back was complete nightmare, the MD-80 was uunclean both inside and out, the cabin staff were depressive to say the least and the approach was one of the worst I have ever experienced. There was no crosswind and no turbulence, however the pilot successfully managed to bakn at about 30 degrees just 300 feet from the ground and then succesfully land as far away from the centre line as possible!
All that for £170…rip off 😀

Alitlia’s colour scheme looks ok, however, the older aircraft and dirty aircraft do not do it any favours.

Great pic once again Keltic. I no fan at all of the Alitalia livery, or the MD 80 range of jets, but still a good shot nun the less.

Are Aliatlia ever going to change that awful c/s? Actually I guess not, considering they have just had a 777 delivered in it, so I can’t see them spalshing out more cash on a c/s revamp.

Would be nice to see something a little different on the aircraft, for example, in the pic below? A deffinate improvement. 🙂

RE: Alitalia

Never believe what one´s told. Alitalia is not better or worse than other airlines. It depends, one can have a great fly with nice crews or a bad experience. As in all airlines. I have flown about five times, and I have experienced anything particularly wrong. On the other way, crews image are great and smart and salads are delicious. MD are a bit cramped (not as much as in Spanair).

RE: Alitalia

My father has flown them on a few occassions from LAX to ATH via MXP. Other than his flight from MXP to JFK on the return being delayed and them losing his luggage for a couple of days, he didn’t mind them too much. With them being part of Skyteam now, he got his Delta mileage, which is what he was mainly concerned about. The way I see it, if you fly anybody other than Virgin from LAX to Europe, it’s all the same. You pretty much have a choice of airlines, you’re going to make one stop at their hub, then continue on. I’ve never flown Virgin but I’ve heard and read enough about their service to know about their product. The choice for me is who I’m getting frequent flyer miles with, so that would be UA or LH. Ironically, Alitalia stopped serving LAX while he was in Greece, which is why he had to go to JFK, then connect to Delta on the return. Why they would stop serving LAX right before the peak summer season, is beyond me. My guess is that they won’t be coming back for while.

RE: Alitalia

Well, I only flew with them once. It wasn’t a bad flight, but it scared me a little, which is why I have probably subconciously avoided them since.

It was in the 80’s and we had just left Rome airport in an A300 to Heathrow. The airport bomb exploded in the same deprture lounge we had been in, about 40 minutes after we departed. The really scary bit was that we were delayed for ages, but suddenly the delay was reduced. When I heard the news back in the UK, my face went white!

RE: Alitalia

Ahh Alitalia that brings back a few memories!I travelled on them around two years ago to Venice from Gatwick on an MD-82.Though I cn’t remember many details from the flight I do remember that the check-in staff at LGW were very ignorent and were not at all cheerful like you expect them to be,though onboard they were actually quite nice.Food was nothing special, also the seats MD-82 were very uncomfortable. The aircraft was quite dirty as well, there were black marks all over it.
I’m not sure why Alitalia have such a bad reputation,it could be because there are quite a few old aircraft, also the flight attendants I have heard are quite snooty (not o nmy flight)which isn’t a very good statement about the airline.

RE: Alitalia

Alitalia is good and reliable airline with a terrible reputation in italia its usually called Alimerda…..(Alishit). I think that many times airlines are a portrait of the countries they represent. In Alitalia we see glory and shame altogether. Nice and fashionable flight attendants but quite rude, nice food sometines served in a terrible way, efficient as the North of Italy but caotic as the South.

RE: Alitalia

LAST EDITED ON 27-05-01 AT 11:12 AM (GMT)[p]I have traveled alitalia from gatwick to venice on a md 82.The flight was all right, but the seats were uncomfortable and the food was not that great. The cabin crew were quite friendly but were very ingnorent at the check in desk.I found that the md 82 like the 747 you saw looked very dirty with black marks all over it.I here now alitalia are now using crj’s on there late night flights from gatwick to venice. When ever i travel to italy now,i am going to use BA or meridiana.I heard that alitalia are investing a great deal in fleet upgrades which includess the purchase of 747-400’s to replace the older 200’s and erj 145’s for alitalia express.
