I know there is a seperate thread running for the aircraft itself, but I’ve kept this one seperate as order news.
Alitalia listed as customer for 20 Superjets
David Kaminski-Morrow, London (01Jul10, 15:13 GMT, 226 words)Alitalia has been listed as a customer for the Sukhoi Superjet 100 by the regional aircraft’s manufacturer, with an order for 20 of the type.
The Italian flag-carrier is included in a portfolio of firm orders for the twin-jet which features in Sukhoi’s newly-released annual report for 2009.
It shows Alitalia as having a firm order for 20 aircraft. The contract is listed as being associated with Sukhoi’s Italian-based marketing partner Superjet International.
Alitalia could not immediately be reached for comment. But the SkyTeam carrier, which emerged as a restructured entity early last year, would become the highest-profile Western customer for the aircraft to date.
Industry sources indicate that the airline would firm the order through a Western lessor to reduce acquisition risks.
Sukhoi’s portfolio lists 123 firm orders, and eight options, for the Superjet as of 1 February 2010.
Russian flag-carrier Aeroflot accounts for 30 of the type, and Armenia’s Armavia for another two. These operators are set to be the first to receive the aircraft, initial deliveries of which will take place this year.
Lessor Avialeasing is listed as the customer for 24 Superjets, while Finance Leasing accounts for two plus the eight options.
Orders affiliated with Superjet International also include ItAli Airlines – which has 10 in the backlog – and companies identified as SOGECA, for 15 aircraft, and ACE for 20.

And the order is of the books again. (Dutch source only)

MOSCOW – Alitalia did not place a defitinive order for the Sukhoi Superjet 100. That announcement was made by Sukhoi. In the recently published annual report published by Sukhoi it said Alitalia had ordered 20 planes. “A mistake”, the company says in an official statement.
According to Sukhoi Alitalia should not have been listed as a customer for the regional airliner. Whether the Italian airline, 25% owned by KLM/Air France, has an interest in the Superjet is something Sukhoi won’t comment on. On the 19th of July the bi-annual Farnborough air show will start. Sukhoi promised they would announce more news on the SSJ-100 there.
With an order for the Superjet Alitalia would have been the first large western customer for Sukhoi. At the moment Sukhoi has sold 123 Superjets.
The potential interest from Alitalia for the SSJ is easily explained. The Italian aviation industry is closely involved with the development of the SSJ. Earlier ItAli Airlines already ordered 10 Superjets.

With Alenia as partner in Sukhoi Civil Aircraft no real surprises here. Alenia is Finmeccanica (with some serious interests in Russia) and Finmeccanica is 30% owned by the Italian state. And CAI, which ownes Alitalia, is heavily politically connected.
It will be interesting to see how this works out. The AN-148, that was seen as the more promising project in Russia/(Ukraine) here, has turned out quite underwhelming. And the SSJ100 has always been seen here as more troubled than the AN-148.
In any case it’s good that a Western customer has been found and some more-or-less hard data will be produced regarding how the SSJ100 behaves in a Western airline environment, and how it does against the Embraers. Good for learning.

An interesting deal.
How much has the rouble appreciated against the Euro in the last 6 months?
It must have been one hell of a sales pitch.

I suspect KLM/AF may be more interested in the C-series for their next batch of aircraft. I understand they think it will be a ‘game-changer’.
GA may have hit the nail on the head, in that the Sukhoi may be a financially attractive aircraft for AZ, rather than a major type for the wider KLM/AF Group.

That’s a thought, but AF/KLM already operate the E170 and the E190, as you point out.
It would make sense for them to replace their Fokker 70s and 100s with more examples of the Embraer types rather than introducing a new type (and manufacturer!) into their fleet.

Interestig. KLM/AF und Alitalia all operate the EMB170-195 series already, so the 20 planes ordered would be a rather small fleet. Well unless AF/KLM is planig to buy more as a replacement for the Fokker 70/100 left.
