Alitalia to buy Boeing, Embraer planes

Well I’m not to sure about this development.
AZ don’t strike me as an airline in a position to do this:

That’s different, they still had them when NW bought more 2nd hand DC-9s.

But for KLM to revert back to a fleet that has already been fased out to replace the more modern version is quite different. Especially since the DC-10 is no longer being made, and the landing charges at AMS for the ยด10 are astronomical. If you thought the enviro lobby in the UK was strict, try living here for a while.

In any case, you still have to hand over a source. I have not seen or heard anything about it and I got the added benefit of knowing Dutch and regularly speaking KLM employees.

I honestly can’t recall the source. Most likely a discussion with my associate who deals with aircraft procurement.
It would seem a bit silly, there’s no denying that.

At any rate… the MD-11 might be good looking in some folks eyes, but its far from a good pax aircraft.

Like NWA for example buying up a load of DC-9’s?

[QUOTE=steve rowell]

I reiterate:
” they’re retiring their MD-11s after only 10 years of service.
KLM apparently want rid of theirs… they want DC-10s instead!!

I couldn’t see any major airline taking a backward step like that, it just wouldn’t be feasable

And the 777, launched and produced after the A340, is nearing 500 BUILT ๐Ÿ˜€

and Airbus is produce more Aircrafts as Boeing ๐Ÿ˜€

KLM wants DC-10????

EDIT: btw:

The original comment about “so many promises, so little delivered” was referring to performance figures that both manufacturers promised for their aicraft while in production. The MD-11 came out a lot short of what MD had promised. Then for airbus we have the A340-300 and the A340-600. But more successfull than the MD-11 for sure… but both where promised to have far more range than they actually have, and such was the situation with the MD-11.

KLM apparently want rid of theirs [the MD-11s]… they want DC-10s instead!!

I would LOVE to know where you found out the information that they want DC-10s. I have not heard anything about that in the Netherlands, neither in the official information nor in the gossip. The MD-11s have a few years left at KLM, and afterwards there’s a good chance they go to Martinair for cargo flights.

You are right they want to dispose of the MD-11s in a few years. The 767s are first to go though as the first leases expire next year. The replacement will be the A330s that have already been ordered, the first of which will be delivered around september or october next year.

Alitalia hopes to purchase 7 Boeing long-haul aircraft and 12 Embraer medium-haul aircraft in 2007 and 2008

Will this order be placed in 2007/08 with delivery later on, or will this order be placed now (or at least soon) for delivery in 2007/08? That’s a large difference!

Though one could get anal and add the 473 orders of the A343 to date, since the 777 was created to compete against both Airbus products ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’m just playing.

For such a dissapointing aircraft the A340 has done quite well… 352 orders and no signs of stopping…

I thought they would have been shedding aircraft not buying them. I thought this was supposed to be a smaller AZ if they get through it.

The MD-11 is the A340 of McDonnell Douglas. So many promises made, so little delivered.

Yes to MD-11, NO to the A340

Finnair isnt in a hurry to get shut of them. Nice planes them MD11s!

I reiterate:

“Why do you think all the sensible players have are will be retiring them”

I think Finnair pack em with more seats than normal.

Look at Delta… they’re retiring their MD-11s after only 10 years of service.

Mind you, its a superb Freight hauler. FedEx can’t get enough of them

Va Bene? Belissimo! You keep hold of them MD11s Alitalia and get your DC9s out of mothballs. New aircraft in indeed!

The MD-11 is a loss making aircraft in terms of PAX service. Why do you think all the sensible players have are will be retiring them.

The DC-9… well NWA have proven it can still make money. But you need to wholey own them to do so, which NWA does.
