All quiet on the Duxford Front

Duxford flying has ground to a halt this week, with the resurfacing of the hard runway. It is scheduled to take till Wednesday to complete. Because the grass runway and hard runway are counted as one the CAA has stated that neither runway can be used.

I don’t know how this affects warbird operators and whether they can use unlicensed airfields, I would have thought they could…. still it will be a quiet weekend I would think.

Paul Day’s display was much more energetic, lower and closer to the crowd than BBMF allow. Don’t get me wrong though, it was beautifully and carefully flown, and Paul did not start until after he had taken the aircraft well away from the circuit to give the engine and systems a good check out.

Was there a Gnat flying out of North Weald on Saturday, 2:30 ish?
Thought at first it was a Hunter but then saw what looked like Gnat undercart come done.
Couldn’t look properly as I was doing 70 mph (of course:)) down the M11 and it seemed advisable to concentrate on the road!

In what way was it “less restrictive” Steve – just interested. I do not have a problem with it (Paul Day being one of the worlds most experienced Spitfire pilots) 🙂

Yes it was indeed Paul Day flying the Spitfire at East Kirkby on Saturday, and what a great display it was too. He was clearly enjoying flying in a somewhat less restrictive way than the BBMF rules allowed him to do!

I do believe that The Major is in the process or Retiring.

Best of British Luck to him I say.

I believe it was Squadron Leader Paul Day, who had just finished his tour as O/C BBMF. Nice that he has still got a Spitfire to fly on his days off!

No problem. Glad you liked them!

Here’s one of the Bayliss Spitfire Tr9 at East Kirkby on Saturday. What a cracking display that was!

Brilliant YakRider!
With your permission, I would like to forward these to the pilots.
Thanks, Janie

Saw the Mustangs departingto the east as we were coming in past Ongar. Here is a pic of the Hunter landing. We’d just got back from our flight to Beachy Head and Rochester in the Bulldog, so had a grandstand view. It was a great day too.

Photos

One or two (static) shots of Janie (not saying which one!) and BBD, but on this odd stuff that says Fuji on the tin … so it’ll be some time before I get them back 🙁

Yes, but some wag at the Squadron pointed out that it is aligned with North Weald Cemetary!

Not a problem. The runway should be predominantly used for northbound landings, I was told today. So there is no need to overfly the cemetry.

And wasn’t it a great day at North Weald? Did anyone get any pics?

No I been to Norwich today Ashley… we can’t fly at the moment but lots of cleaning to do. I maybe down tomorrow to clean a tiger or to as North Weald is on Sunday. East kirkby is far to far to go on my little own, my Rover would never make it 🙂

Some of them are old wartime pilots. I’m sure they’ll appreciate it. Hopefully, they will not write too many letters of complaint anyway! It’s a grave matter.

The deadsides of the 05/23 circuits at Cambridge take you over a cemetary 🙂
