Can’t seem to find the sports thread, so here’s a new one.
Does anyone actually watch/like football here? If so, what team? 🙂

How about greatest ever football matches you personally witnessed, whether it be skill factor, result, high drama or whatever and I would be interested if any of you were at any of these matches and what your thoughts were.
.
AS a 10 yr old lad. I was standing in the North Bank of the Molineux watching Steve ‘The Tank’ Kindon demolish anyone who got in his way. The image of half a dozen Leeds players on their arses will stay with me to my grave!! We lost 1-0 by the way. For those of a younger disposition, imagine Kancelskis with Scwarzennegers build!! Even younger readers, sorry, but there are no real hard, passionate, club focused players these days that I can compare him and his asociates (Bremner, Hunter, etc etc etc) with.

Chelsea 2-1 Arsenal
That fight at the end was.. well, interesting.
The game wasn’t televised here in good old Canada so I missed the game and the highlights later that evening. But from the various news reports I’ve read online, I imagine it must have been quite interesting.
It is interesting however that Arsenal played most of their younger players and not Henry and a few of the other players. I wonder if the outcome would have been different if the man had played. Might Arsenal have won the game if he had started his big guns.
Cheers!

… Where Arsenal have scored 9 goals so far this season:D (sorry)
Seriously, Liverpool are almost dead certs to go through along with Man U. Chelsea should have no trouble since they got away goal but I’m not confident about my team Arsenal, and as much as I’d love to see them do it, I think Celtic will lose to AC.

One of the best matches I have ever seen was World Cup 06, France vs Spain and how Zinedine Zidane single handeldly dismantled a team which had promised to send him and the French team packing. It was probably one of the best games he had ever played. It was then I knew France had a decent shot at maybe winning the tournament. We all know how his career ended. But in my heart, he will always be one of the greatest all-time, if not the greatest.

How about greatest ever football matches you personally witnessed, whether it be skill factor, result, high drama or whatever and I would be interested if any of you were at any of these matches and what your thoughts were.
I rate as follows:-
1) Nottingham Forest v Man Utd, 1967-68 season.
A bog standard match at the City Ground, however United had finished Champs and were in the European Cup, which this team won that season, and Forest had been runners up. Just for once, Forest managed to put out their full team, they had no money for decent reserves, United were lacking Nobby Styles, which was crucial to the result, I thought, but of course their forward line of Best, Charlton and Law was awe inspiring. I was in the Trent End right behind the goal and witnessed a remarkable header from Law that was tipped over by Peter Grummit the Forest keeper in a way that was better than the famous Banks save from Pele, unlike today, Law and Charlton shook Grummits hand.
Eventually, Joe Baker took control for Forest and without Styles, their defence was suspect, Baker scored 2 goals, he should have had a hat trick but Frank Wignall touched the last effort over the line. The icing on the cake was completed by Besty, he took the ball on from a Forest corner and dribbled the whole length of the pitch to slam it in the net, what a match, 3-1 to Forest, but that didn’t matter, it was just a privelidge to witness these great players from either side at their peak.
2) Fulham v Notts County, late 70’s.
Fulham were in the second division and decided to invest in order to get back into the upper tier, the investments included Bobby Moore, George Best and Rodney Marsh. The first match involving this awe inspiring team was against the unrated Notts County at Craven Cottage, unfortunately Fulham didn’t allow for the tactical genius of Jimmy Sirrel, Counties manager. He simply filled the midfield with defenders and used wingers, their well known centre forward, Les Bradd was used as a decoy, and it worked. Best was snuffed out and got frustrated and County went on to win 5-1, the Fulham goal being an own goal from Les Bradd, sent back to help in defence. The greatest goal was from Man City reject Steve Carter, he picked up the ball on the edge of the box from a Fulham corner, ran the full length of the pitch and ripped out the back of the net from a full 40 yards.
All this was recorded on LTV including a smiling comment from the Fulham management that it was a complete fluke,……..My ****.
3) Leeds v Notts County, League Cup
Tie at Elland Road, crappy Notts v Leeds, Bremner,Lorimer, et al.
Poor old Notts, down at heal 2nd div club drawn against the mighty Leeds, though having defeated Everton, but thats another story, in the last round. all their star midfield players, Masson, Busby, were injured, so the great Sirrell, put full backs in mid field, and used wingers, Euro Leeds couldn’t cope with this, Scanlon scored a blinder from the right wing and Leeds were stuffed.
3)Everton v Notts County
League Cup, First Div Champs v Saddo Notts.
At Goodison Park, Notts were able to manage a draw, but at home, Les Bradd, bless him, scored 2 remarkable goals and nearly got his hatrick Everton could not cope with Sirrels tactics, I rate this man as the greatest Scottish/English manager of all time.

I watched the second half of the Liverpool:Barcelona game and I have to say that Barcelona did not look to be the powerhouse many believe it is. Ronaldhino was hardly a factor and the rest of his teammates looked powerless against a strong defensive team from Liverpool. Liverpool did exactly what they needed to do, hold off Barcelona around midfield and if able, take advantage of a defensive mistake to score when needed.
Barcelona has a great moountain to overcome. They would have to score three or four goals, maybe more if they want to move on to the next round. It’s a tall order and maybe even impossible. I can’t see Barcelona move on after such a dismall game. Too many distraction off the pitch!!

Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes is convinced that “lucky” Liverpool don’t have the quality to kill off the Spanish side’s Champions League dream.
“They had good fortune for the first goal, and they had a lot of luck with their second goal, too, with a lucky rebound,” he stated.
“They won in Barcelona, we can win at Anfield.
“We showed that last year when we played Chelsea and beat them at home.”
Meanwhile, Barcelona president Joan Laporta last night dismissed Liverpool’s chances claiming: “We will still make the final. This defeat was an accident.
“I am absolutely convinced that our team will be in Athens for the final,” he crowed.
“I am very confident. The two goals we conceded were a bit strange, as we were very much in control of the game.”
Hmmm, really….

Doesn’t by any chance have anything at all to do with the fact that you have to pay to get in does it?
Regards,
kev35
Actually at one point I didn’t have to, I used to sell programmes which meant that you could get in for nothing and find a suitable grandstand seat of your choice, it was great sitting next to all these saddos who had paid a weeks wages to do something that cost us nothing, and we got paid for selling the programmes too, do they apply the same criteria at Legends, it may be worth looking into, along with all the other airshows and events, having got such a reputation, I may as well take advantage of it.
There used to be a very good hole in the fence at Notts Counties ground, circa 1969, they must have gone nearly bankrupt over that as it must have boosted their attendance in reallity by 100%, good job Don Masson was a free transfer.
