Alvis Leonides Engines….any use?

Some odd things found here in the USA, and in the interest of world peace, trying to find a good home for them. First off, two Alvis Leonides Engines with no paperwork other than a tag atop one that says, “Runs rich” but “inhibited 1987” and the other one with no tag at all. Both have been in this hangar for twenty years, and are ready to ship. These appear to be operable spares and are fairly complete. Any trades would be considered…but I prefer trubine engines of the Nene or Avon variety…so these could be a partial trade. A sale is preferred, but if not, I can make tables with them…and maintain them that way. They are very interesting powerplants, very compact for the power they produce. A shame they were not on the T-6/SNJ at some point…. Is there any use for these? Ships from Nevada, USA…

Hi, what about the engines now. I found your offer yesterday and like to know what happened to the engines. We are looking for a prop extention of an Alvis Leonides for the Dehavilland Prop. It’s the english 3 spline extension at the propgear. Regards harald

Very nice.
Normally the Pembroke would carry the military designated engine, the 127.
The two Leonides in the EBay link above are 126s for the Piston Provost, the main difference from the 127 is that they are cartridge start while the 127 is electric start.
The 503 has the same power ratings, boost pressures at the same RPMs as the 126/127.
The Sea Prince had 125s, which I thinkwas the 504.
I can’t tell what variant Blackjet is selling, hopefully he will be back to tell us.

I’m certainly not an engineer so please don’t act on my advice, but the basic units, with changes to the ancillaries, should all interchange.

I must admit I would have thought the majority of UK Leonides spares would be up in your neck of the woods.

Can I ask if ‘ES will be heading to Newquay?

Ours is G-BXES aka XL954. We have the 503 series engines with the mod to fit larger gudgeon pins.

The 530 series was the long stroke Leonides for the Twin Pioneer.
Even with the basic 500 series Leonides there were a few variants, though this is down to different fuel sytsems, superchargers, starters etc, rather than the basic lump, but there are two distinct power outputs, with the Prince/Sea Prince having the lower and the Pembroke/President having the higher.
If you don’t mind me asking, which Pembroke have you got Steve?

Hi,
we are looking for engine parts for our Leonides-powered Percival Pembroke (we are running a collection of old British aircraft here). You might have something that will get us out of trouble…..BUT…..there were two sizes of Leonides. We need the smaller one. One way to tell is to count the number of fins on the cylinders (ie the barrel portion, ignoring the cylinder head). The smaller engine has 9 fins; the larger has 13 fins. I can’t make out from the photos which one you have. Of course, you might still have the makers plate on the case near the CSU mounting. The smaller engine is likely to be a 502 or 503. If it says 531 or Mk138 it is a larger engine. There was only about 1/2″ difference in stroke, but none of the parts seem to be common!

The engines are For Sale, and shipping to the UK will be something I can take care of, doing the legwork and all, but the buyer will have to pay the trucking. I recommend shipping by truck to port of Oakland, then container, or pallet in a container to a UK port. I would like $2,500 USD each, but am open to offers.

Peter, thanks for the prompt! Actually we do have two “spare” engines in our engine shed.

We may need one, the port engine on 572 is vibrating badly and trying to free itself from the confines of the wing.
