I would like to identify an AM marked compass similar to, but “not” a P8.
It details are: British Royal Tudor Crown A.M. REF: No 6A/0.892. The brass housing measures not including the protruding parts approximately 6 ¼ inches (16cm) in diameter and 3 1/8 inches (8cm) high.
Can anyone identify type and typical aircraft use?

Mark,
Had a look at the eBay site for the compass and I’d strongly advise that you do let it go through to the keeper – primarily because of its incompleteness. There’s still a reasonable number of them lurking around Oz.
You’re always welcome up here mate. Unfortunately my workshop (as you know) isn’t anywhere near as good as I’d like it to be but the situation’s being addressed slowly while also trying to progress the Wirraway. Would be great if your son will help on the project.
Funny you should mention JDK and I making a pilgrimage to Moorabbin because we’re actually doing just that, tomorrow afternoon. It’s just down the road though so I could definitely make myself available for another such trip at some time.
Cheers,
Matt

Thanks Matt/Oliver,
this item is actually still current on ebay but my recent spending spree looks like I will let this one go through to the keeper but someone else may have an interest in pursuing it so::
Its curently sitting on a USD$50 bid with 2 1/2 days to run, and located in the USA.
Matt, would look forward to dropping up your way some time to catch up and visit your Wirraway project and discussing workshop planning, my shed starts its metamorphis š® from junk storage yard to cleaned up workshop this weekend
(I hope?? ?? actually got my oldest son now offering to help with old aeroplanes!! and not playing computer games!! š ) ,
or alternatively I and JohnP/Setter are planning to meet up for a Moorabbin Tour, perhaps you and JDK and others can descend on Moorabbin enmasse for a forum catchup and a gold coin donation to the Beaufort project, and admire Ralph Cusack’s handiwork up close and personal. š

Mark,
There’s a Wirraway connection with the O2 compass that you may or may not be aware of. Still haven’t got to the bottom of it myself yet but it might be another thing to discuss when we catch up sometime. I’ll be calling you in the near future on another topic.
Olivier,
Great information there mate. My sincere apologies that I haven’t made any reply to your note after sending the manual. I haven’t forgotten and will get around to it sometime. Sorry mate.
Cheers,
Matt

Hi Mark,
your compass is an Observer Compass type 02A ref. 6A/0.892. or 6A/892.
It is normally fitted with a N°4 azimuth circle 6A/890 and the compass card use luminous paint.
It was fixed in the observer’s position (holder type 05) bearing is taken by directing sight on an azimuth circle onto the object and reading the compass card through the reflecting prism.
In the RAAF it was use at least on ANSON ; BATTLE ; BEAUFIGHTER ; OXFORD ; SEAGULL V ; BEAUFORT ; CATALINA PBY ; HUDSON ; VENGEANCE B34.
Cheers,
Olivier
