Amelia

This might be old hat, but I don’t recall seeing anything on the forum about this so far:

Sorry to bounce this thread but I’ve just seen the movie and my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It really looks as though a great deal of care was taken with the flying shots and there are some good things in it, such as a Bleriot(?). a Jungmann, a Ford Tri-motor, a Waco and even a couple of Tiger Moths. Even if they are not all to period it’s all pretty close. As others have said Hilary Swank’s resemblance to Earhart is striking and the film doesn’t pretend to provide a “happy” ending and sticks pretty close to what I understand to be the facts. Even Bernard Chabbert (the Duxford commentator) gets a credit which is fair as his aircraft was used in the film. Just one question. How did they film the crash of the Lockheed?

Some excellent photos on this link…scroll down

http://forum.pegase.tv/viewtopic.php?t=4286&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=690

TV surfing in the other night came across..’Amelia – The Final Flight’ where they had used a Beech18 in what was a reasonable movie which emphasised Mantz’s uneasiness with her experience to complete the flight. No idea when it was made as didn’t watch the credits…

…we built the Lockeed Electra that she flew the Atlantic solo in. I am sure at some point , I will have to endure the usual armchair critics pointing out inaccuracies etc.

You mean like she flew the Atlantic solo in a Vega and not an Electra? :dev2:

(Sorry, couldn’t resist. I know you got it right — her “little red bus” looks pretty convincing winging its way to Ireland on screen).

Mmmm – wonder what they’re using for Earhart’s L10E Electra that she disappeared in. As far as I know there’s only one other L10E extant and that’s a long term restoration project that isn’t airworthy. I think there are a couple of L10A’s airworthy including the one Linda Finch recreated Earhart’s round the world trip in……
Just so long as they don’t use a Beech 18 :eek::(

So you didnt watch the trailer then:rolleyes:

Also the TFC Blog will answer your question:)

……….he promised it would be aeronautically good with correct period aircraft. However, he said he couldn’t provide too many details.

It’s not my usual vein of aeronautical interest, but I quite fancy seeing this.

Wasn’t there a pic of one of the replica aircraft in a recent Flypast? A floatplane of some sort, with electric motors turning the props….?

Yes , we built two “mock up ” aircraft.
The Fokker Tri Motor that she was a passenger in during her first Atlantic crossing and the Lockeed Electra that she flew the Atlantic solo in.
The Fokker is now in the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Museum in Sault St Marie Ontario and the Electra is now part of Paul Allen’s collection in the USA.
( Paul Allen was one of the financers of the movie)
We also built cockpits for both and for the Lockheed 10a so that we could shoot the interior scenes
The Fokker has electric motors behind the the radial engines. It was actually floated in the Atlantic with the props spinning for some scenes.
Hope everyone enjoys the movie but I am sure at some point , I will have to endure the usual armchair critics pointing out inaccuracies etc.

Saw a presentation today for work of forth coming films and Amelia was one of them. Included the trailer and some other footage and looked really good on screen. Some great flying sequences.

Out Oct in US and Nov in UK.

amelia

Guys

I am the person mentioned above as the Airplane Wrangler. I also did some of the flying in the movie, consulted the aviation aspects of the movie, aviation wardrobe and was tech advisor for the construction of the mock up aircraft.

Here is a pic of actress Hilary Swank and I in front of my 1940 Fleet Finch 16b.
It was taken at the Tigerboys Aeroplane Works in Guelph Ontario Canada.
She wanted to experince flying in a vintage airplane and showed up in full costume ( except for the modern sunglasses).
She had about twenty hours dual and I let her fly for a while.
Hilary is a fairly competent pilot.all and all a great evening of flying http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o125/fleet16/Hillaryandstuntpilot003.jpg

At risk of stating the obvious, but the facial resemblance between Hillary Swank and Amelia Earheart is startling!

Thank you for drawing attention to this film.

On the “other” forum a contributor said he was working as a “plane wrangler” for the film and he promised it would be aeronautically good with correct period aircraft. However, he said he couldn’t provide too many details.

However he film was shot in Canada…presumably to save money.
But, IMHO, saving money and good aviation content are usually mutually exclusive. 😀
