American overflights!

Read recently that the US asked Canada for passenger lists for all flights that overfly the US but do not land in the US! Canada has refused. A lot of internal Canadian flights cross through US airspace. Wouldn’t the US like to have a list of every passenger who visited Cuba! Canadians are very important to Cuba and Canada and Mexico are the way Americans get to Cuba to avoid the embargo. I think buried in the Patriot Act is a rule that any passenger transitting the US, say changing planes in LAX for Oz has to clear customs and immigration inluding their baggage.

Actually a few US carriers operate charter flights out of Florida to Cuba, with Continental being one of them.

You remember the KLM flight that was rejected from US airspace a few weeks ago? It was rejected because of a passenger that was on a US no-go list. The US had received that list from Mexico, even though there are no treaties that allow the US to get Dutch passenger manifests for flights that do not end in the US.

The same rule lies behind the US’s request to get Canadian manifest.
