……then they take it down after locals protested.
MOD blamed a ‘low ranking Officer’ for the blunder.

Whilst visiting the tower museum at my old base Bassingbourn I was parked by this fence waiting for an escort, I wondered what it was about, now I know.

Screw the Libyans. Is life that short that we forget this lady?WPC Yvonne Joyce Fletcher (15 June 1958 – 17 April 1984)?

Why have a go at the Libyans? They haven’t done anything and I doubt they care one way or another.
.
Dear Derek, i never had a go at the Libyans, all i said is IF they don’t like it they know what to do.Some of them MAY actually have enjoyed learning abit about history from the area they will be in.

You are both probably right. The statement is ambiguous.
“A DIO (Defence Infrastructure Organisation) spokesperson said: “A temporary screen was erected around the US War Memorial at Bassingbourn. This has now been removed.”
When pressed further for comment, the spokesman said: “We do not know who made the decision, it could have been a low level officer who made it.
“The barracks is undergoing refurbishment in preparation for the Libyans and the fence could have been added to the list of things to be done when it shouldn’t have been.”

That doesn’t look a temporary screen to me. Looks as though someone high up made an idiotic decision which has come back and bitten them. Good! It’s ridiculous it ever crossed anyone’s mind!

he believed the fence to have been erected out of fear of offending the Libyan troops
David Crowe, chairman of the Friends of the Eighth denied the fence had anything to do with the Libyan troops and instead said the fence was erected for “security reasons.”
“The barracks is undergoing refurbishment in preparation for the Libyans and the fence could have been added to the list of things to be done when it shouldn’t have been.”
A non-story based on rumour and supposition. Good for getting passengers for the outrage bus though.

The Libyans may find an F111 as a gate guard a little trying, but a war memorial is just that and stays put and in view.

” Memphis Bell was the nickname given to the Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress bombers flown by the 91st Bomb Group (Heavy) – which suffered huge losses of men between 1942 and 1945.”
If the Libyans don’t like it they know what they can do.
