Amish

Saw the start of the film Witness (Harrison Ford/Kelly McGillis) on TV last night and it got me thinking: the Amish want none of the trappings of the modern world (no electricity, engines, etc), but were they called up for military service? I think they don’t use buttons on their clothes for religious purposes so I fail to see how they would have fitted into conscription… And since they appeared to refer to non-Amish as ‘English’ would they have been interned (although I recall that only happened to Orientals in WWII, didn’t it)?
