AMS 01/05/05 (10 pics)

Another day at AMS. Lots of interesting visitors, but I only managed to catch a few of those. The best where the 4 (F O U R) tristars! Only managed to see two though, only one of which got a half decent shot of. On the “bright side”, following an inspection the plane was banned from further visits so I got a rare plane now. Not sure if that should really be reason for joy but anyway….

A fifth L1011 can still be found stored at Schiphol Oost following the aborted take-off last year. Also stored at AMS are now a European 747-200 (sans engines). A Focus Air 747 could also be seen among those two planes, but I am not sure if it is stored or undergoing maintenance.

Also of interest where a Tu-204C of Aviastar. My first of the type. Interesting too was a BBJ (‘700) from the Ford Motor Company. Rather then going to the executive ramp at Oost, it parked at the terminal. That kind a surprised me.

The wind was a bit annoying. Most of the time runway 18R/36L was used. There is acces to this runway, but for photography it is really limited to planes flying overhead. Only with a long L-glass lense might a rotation shot be attempted. That’s unfortunately well beyond my financial means, so fly-over shots only from that spot.

p.s. The photo of the 777 rotating with loads of cars in front is taken at the official spotting area alongside the Kaagbaan.

Some more information about the tristar pictured above. The plane is now at Salzburg Austria. There it will/has change(d) ownership. The new owner is/will be BFS Business Flight. They want to put the tristar on Austrian register within ten days.

Meanwhile the plane is still banned from the Netherlands. The Dutch CAA has still not made an official statement. Rampers did reveal some details. For instance that only one cargo door was operative. The moving belt in the cargo hold was inoperative. In the words of one ramper: “I would not put my sandwiches on this aircraft…..”

All this comes from the Dutch Aviation Photographers mailing list (DAP).”

With or without the door, I’m sure airline had the option of having a galley behind said door or more hold space.

This door thing was nagging at me because I had an idea it was fairly standard on L10s… I’ve checked various sources both books and the web, and it seems that the lower lobe door forward of the wing was pretty much standard on all TriStars except the short-body -500. A few appear not to have windows in the doors, but they seem to have the door.

I would not think the wing box can be converted to have an additional door. The wingbox is the main support structure so you should not make cuts in it.

So did TWA also put their galleys under the cabin? Never knew that. Learn something every day!

Is it possible that the customer after TWA could have done a retrofit and have the lower galley installed after the fact? I flew on a TWA Tristar once, that I can remember, when I was 9 and I don’t remember where the galleys were!

9L-LDN… L1011 TriStar 100 msn 1221 first flight in 1981. Started life with TWA as N31033 (so, an old friend from LHR then), then SE-DPP with Time Air Sweden, TF-ABM with Air Atlanta and various lessees, C-GRYU with Royal Aviation, back to Air Atlanta, XU-122 with Kampuchea Airlines and finally 9L-LDN.
