Amsterdam Airport: Lancaster PA474 temporarily grounded with engine trouble…

Hello all,

According to http://www.scramble.nl/forum/viewtopic.php?p=324669#p324669 engine number four of Lancaster PA474 went unserviceable at Amsterdam Airport last Monday. She apparently now needs another engine.

As you can see on the pictures at
http://www.scramble.nl/forum/viewtopic.php?f=41&t=51601 she made a flypast and landed with four turning propellers, but she taxied in with only three… 🙁

Apparently Merlin number 4 has to replaced and this may take a couple of days or perhaps even a week. She is currently parked in Hangar 02 on the Schiphol-East part of Amsterdam Airport.

http://www.scramble.nl/forum/viewtopic.php?p=328355 shows pictures made during taxi-ing for her testflight and eventually her departure back home… 🙂

I hope those concerned (Amsterdam Airport, various authorities, etc.) were lenient in charging extra costs, if any…

At least she was very welcome in the Dutch Dakota Association’s hangar! 🙂

Appalling!
We all know that air transport could have been found if it was decreed to have been “important”. The fact remains that somebody decreed that this was “not important”. Who actually was this person? What position does (s)he hold? This is NOT a security matter. It does NOT come under the “need to know” criteria. Who dunnit?, and why? If one makes decisions then one has to be publicly accountable. If I’m told (on good authority) that the Standby Herc at Lyneham blew the Floggle-Toggle on No2 as it started up, then fair enough. Over-secrecy breeds distrust.

Squadron Leader Al Pinner gave an interview when the C-160 Transall arrived at RAF Coningsby. This was aired on BBC Look North. He stated that the BBMF Dakota was going to be used, but decided against it. I can’t remember now what the reason was? Could have been cross winds? The decision was made to go with the European Airlift Agreement.

It makes absolutely perfect sense to utilise other NATO and EU spare airlift capacity. When the RAF C-130 fleet is busy why should it be re-scheduled for such non-operational matters? That is why the agreement is in place. The Red Arrows also use this agreement for the utilisation of spare airlift capability.

Quite fitting that a Lanc was in mainland Europe on the 66th anniversary of the Dams raid.:D

More than 2 weeks already. Is this a post war record for a Lanc in the Netherlands?

Because of weather problems the first “post-engine swap test flight” and (hopefully!) subsequent ferry flight back to the UK is again postponed, now to this Tuesday…

There was a Battle of Britain display at Duxford Spring Air show tomorrow Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster (17th May) so I assume no Lancaster involved this year?? 🙁

Was PA474 supposed to make an appearance somewhere in the UK this weekend ?[/QUOTE]

She was supposed to do a flypast of a new 158 Squadron memorial on Saturday 16 May 2009 at 15:30.
It will be unveiled 15:05 hrs by The Archbishop of York , Dr John Sentamu . The memorial will carry the names of all 158 squadron personnel who were killed on bomber operations during the war. The memorial designed and sculptured by Peter Naylor of Beverley has been sponsored by Novera Energy who are building a wind farm on the site of the former wartime airfield . Once
operational all of the wind turbines will carry the names of squadron
aircraft.

I am sure that she had a full programme of events to fly to other than this.

Paul.

Expensive place to get stuck – stayed over there for a night in just a 4 seat piper and it cost £130. Tech engine + heavy bomber = many days and big bills

She is now due back on the 18th May providing the weather is ok

Ho hum, was hoping to see her fly over Hendon on Sunday. Still, better safe than sorry – fingers crossed all goes well.

When she comes down to Hendon later in the year, any chance of a Westerly diversion over Northwood HQ? 😉 😉 😉

Cheers

This Friday morning they will try again… Apparently the weather in the UK is keeping the Lancaster from leaving Amsterdam…

Still over here…

As of this Tuesday the 12th of May Lancaster PA474 is STILL at Amsterdam. She already has her “new” Merlin fitted in nacelle nr. 4 but apparently bad weather in the UK is holding her back. 🙁
She also still has to make her first “post-replacement” test flight. Engine runs were already performed last Saturday.
It may be the Lanc will go back to the UK this Thursday the 14th.

Perhaps they ought to change all the engines and do a major service on the airframe changing the maintenance crew once a week until the entire staff at Coningsby have been rotated through:D:D:D

:D:)
